hey calidog

did you copy with a DVD-R disc or a DVD+R disc? does it matter?
I don't know what format the Acura DVD-Rom accepts. You said you burned with a Sony DVD+R drive, does that mean you used a DVD+R disc?

Apple is way better than PC, but PC is more common. Just like Betamax was better than VHS, but VHS was marketed better. I sold PC's and Macs for 3 years and NOTHING can touch the Apple when dealing with Multimedia.

i agree with you that pcs are worlds behind macs when you are dealing with A/V Multimedia Processing

however, in an industry where flexibility is key, apple has never been ahead, given their closed and narrow design, architecture, and marketing strategy

imagine teh day you'll be able to install linux on an apple!

There was a guy on the Lexus boards that was able to make a copy of their navigation DVD, but there was something special he had to do.

It wasn't a straight up copy and burn.

Angry Problems Copying The Navigation DVD

I tried burning a copy of the Navigation DVD (FOR EXPERIMENTAL PURPOSES ONLY!!!!!) and it does not work. I can read the disc in my computer, it has a bunch of directories called "Navi", "ZZZ", "ZU200", etc... However, when I put the disc into the navigation system in the car, the screen show a big ugly yellow box stating that the disc is not recognized.

Although Nero usually copies all copyrighted CD's, for some reason it did not do a good job with this CD. I compared the contents on the original DVD that I borrowed from my cousins (BTW, a Honda Oddesey Mini-Van) to this one and they were identical.

One other thing, when I inserted the DVD from my cousins Honda, the system "flashed" the firmware on my system and allowed me to read both his and mine as long they were both originals.

Hope this helps and feel free to recommend any solutions.

You guys realize among other victims in such a crime, bootlegging sideskirts the tax system and shorts our gvt who pays intelligence and armed forces ... which works to fight terrorism.

Not only does bootlegging hose the economy but it also helps make terrorism possible. It also hurts Medicaid, Social Security and other public services and I'm sure you wouldn't rob your own grandmothers... Just something to chew on.

And no, I do not copy music and software on Kaaza and the like. If I want something I either buy it or live without.

I was searching for DVD-9 blanks. Seems like they do not make them. Movie or data DVDs at 9.4 GB are pressed, not burned. Anyway, this is the info I found... So I am not sure how Navi DVD copy could be burned...

Can anyone let me borrow their backup copy.... wink wink

If you've been following the HD thread you know some of us are trying to figure a way to use the map data on the DVD disk on a 5GB hard drive in our systems. I would like to see the files on the disk....and it IS legal to use the software for "testing and compatibility purposes".

You can send it to me anonymously if you want. Or I can pay you for the disk and postage...

Thanks!

Good luck, seeing as the new disc is dual layer and they only sell single layer burners right now.

I seem to remember something on the news that the dual layer burners were coming out in Asia? So maybe someone will bring one in from Japan.... I am sure USA will not see one for at least another year...

For those who've burned copies, and been successful, what was the format of the disk? UDF or CDFS? That may be the difference. I'm able to see the files on my PC, but like Sarj, the car just says the disk is unreadable. Other burned DVDs I have ,as well as my original Nav DVD use the UDF format while the burned copy used CDFS. Any ideas?

The original dsk is less than 4GB, so the single/dual layer issue is irrelevant on this topic.

Last I checked, it was not illegal to have a backup copy of the product you own.

is 2.11b a 4.7 gb disk? I've made a working copy of my 2.05b with a dp G4, Toast and the superdrive.
I've noticed that it's not the format I had problems with, but the disc itself. For some reason, 1x discs from Princo work best in our Navi computer. I would be interested in trying out the 2.11 software though...

hey guys,
quick question. i made a backup copy of my navi dvd. sometimes, the display shows an error message along the lines of "unformated disk cannot read see dealer". other times it works perfectly. i've never seen this message with the original disk. any ideas or suggestions?
thanks,
peter.

I'm wondering. for those with successful burns, there are variables we need to know:

Did you use DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, or DVD-RAM media?
Did you use the CDFS format or UDF format?
Did you simply perform a diskcopy procedure or first copy files to your hard rive then create a data disk?
These answers will help others trying to duplicate your success.

I believe that if they review the picing structure of nearly $200 and make the updates a reasonable price, more people would buy rather than backup the disks. You should be able to see that with the music industry. People downloaded music because CDs were too expensive, among other reasons. Now, music is available at reasonable cost because you can buy individual songsa rather than only the format record companies want you to take. I think your logic is flawed. If we keep buying the expensive updates, then they'll keep charging lots of $$, since there's no incentive to be more competitively prices. And the issue of a non-standard ROM is a non-issue. SOMEONE would figure out how to duplicate it. The ket is value pricing. That's what makes eBay so successful. Why buy retail?
Now, back to my questions...

It's still illegal to sell 'backups'. Any time you sell material that you do not own the copyright to, you are breaking the law. You can face huge fines and even a few years behind bars. If you were to get caught you obvuisly wouldnt do time unless you have previous convictions or sold alot of copies. imo its just not worth the ten thousand dollar fine. Its also not a very good idea to talk about illegal activities on internet forums where anyone could be reading. Im not suggesting it, but it would be safer to just aska friend if you could borrow his new navi dvd and copy it without ever mentioning it here.

Yo, Nick79...

Probably just a typo on your part, but you *did* write in an earlier post:

Selling backups is perfectly legal.
This is the basis for the misunderstanding with TimN88. Check your own posts before you get up-in-arms and start telling people off.
