Post Breaking in Period

Hello everybody!

I am new to the TL family, having just bought my car this past Monday. I enjoy reading your comments, but have one question that was touched on but not addressed in detail (from what I have read). I realize that the break-in period is 600 miles or so, and I won't be putting many miles on my car until my broken right leg heals up (another story all together). How should I drive the car during the "break-in" period? I know the manual says at varying speeds and with increased breaking distance, but I was wondering if any of you have had experiences to the contrary. I look forward to reading your comments.

Rob

P.S. This is an excellent site

Hey there Rob and welcome to our TL family. Follow the book, avoide jack rabbit starts and slamming on the breaks. You don't need to baby the car, just go it easy for the first 600 - 1000 miles. This little bit of attention now, will pay you back in the years to come.

Aww, just don't dog it too hard. You wil notice that MPG and performance start to improve after about 1000 miles, also.

I took a trip the first month I owned mine, and varied both vehicle and engine speed the whole time. I varied b/t 4th and 5th gear on the highway every so often just to be safe, but I'm sure that was overkill.

Acura says they put special additives in the oil for break-in, so don't change it before a minimum of 3000 miles. Also, many people (my mechanic included) are of the opinion that you shouldn't use synthetic oil until about 7000 miles or so.

Yeah, I'd agree with most of what's been said, just kind the first 600, no WOT starts or hard breaking. Me, I'm at 638 miles so I just got through the break in. I didn't go more than 2/3 throttle at any point, and tried to stay under 1/2 most the time. Also, I did put some highway miles on it, but I was varying my speed a lot so the RPM's would vary, and I kept it under 75mph, also no cruise control. Anyhow, today on the way home from work since it was past the 600 I got a little taste of hard acceleration, sweet!!!! Not too much different than the Type-S CL that I borrowed. Yes that 35 extra horses is noticeable, but I mean BARELY. I hadn't felt what the car was like at WOT until now so I'm more than happy and glad I didn't buy a Type-S for all the bundles that buying a 2001 saved me...

Just make sure you remember absolutely no cruise control until the break-in period is over.

Congrats on your purchase and welcome to the TL family.

Did you order any mods yet??

Acura 3200,

I have the burlwood shifter and am getting an Alpine 620 installed today. Other than that, I'll probably keep as is

That's cool... I was just kidding anyway. Oh, by the way, that's what I said when I bought mine too. Then this site got to me and I ordered all the Comptech upgrades. Took me 14 months to decide to do it though.

Best of luck with your car.
