Break-In Period

Hi Everyone,

Since I can't search the archives, I was wondering if someone can help me with a couple of questions.

I know that we're supposed to take it easy for at least 600 miles. But I've already taken the car on a 180 mile trip from Houston to Austin. During the trip, I don't think I varied the speed too much and I drove it up to 90 mph. Do you think it would damage my engine?

Also, I've tested the SS on 2 occassions and I revved it up to about 4000 rpm, and maybe 5000 rpm. Anything bad there?

I've been babying the car for the most part except for these instances. I'm up to about 450 miles so I guess I only have 150 more miles to go. I've read on some websites that it would be a good idea to occassionly rev the engine to 4000-5000 rpm so that the I won't lose performance later on.

Thanks for answering my questions!

well to be frank... couple of bad things.....

1) you shouldn't have hit vtec during breakin. i personally won't suggest anything higher than 4000 rpm...

2) staying with a certain rpm is bad too. you should always vary your rpm with a new car. though i guess 180 miles wasn't that bad

that really applied to the old engines made out of cast iron whereby if you stayed within a certain RPM, the cylinder heads would form minute edges within the cylinder block and these edges would prevent the cylinder heads from physically going beyond these edges, thuse reducing power. however, in the newer engines such as the TL's, i dont believe this applies. there are people on this board that have "gunned" it from day 1 and have had no problems...i wouldnt worry about what you have done so far.

I would suggest anywhere from 500 - 1000 miles of driving your car...... Just get used to it, let it settle in & then when you think you have driven it enough, let the V-Tec kick in!!!!!!!!
