Brake Pad Maintenance

How often do you guys find, on average, that you need to replace the factory brake pads? I have an '03 Type S with 13,200 miles, and factory brake pads. I'm going on a roadtrip next month (about 1400 miles total), and I want to make sure I'm not going to hear the "squealing noise" when I'm somewhere in God's country in the Midwest. I know if I bring it in for an "inspection" they're going to bang me out for the whole job, anyway.

Thanks

The original pads went for around 24k before I have to resurface the rotors due to warping and the second brake pads still run good. The TLS is currently at 42k on the clock.
