Unhappy Bought car a week ago...tranny already nearing death?

OK i just bought a spanking new 2003 TL-S a week ago. It has only 300 miles on it. I am not sure if this is a major tranny problem but I have a feeling it is!

Yesterday I was pulling out my car which was parked on a SMALL slope. I put the car in reverse and took my feet off the the brake. I nearly hit the car in front of me! I again made sure the car was in R. I shifted it back the P and then again to R a few times. It still went forward. I had to wait till the car in fron of me pulled out until i can get out of the parkin lot!( NO!, I didn't try to floor it on reverse!)

First of all is this a MAJOR problem that is sort of a foreshadowinf of future TL tranny problems?
Should I go through the hassle of constant tranny problems or should I just return the car and get my money bacK? It only a week old!!!

I am very dissapointed right now. Please give me some advice. Someone!

:wow: If I were you, I'd go back to the dealer I bought it from and :argue: What's the production date on your car and when you say "Brand spanking new" .. you mean you got the car with 0 miles right? Also have you been breaking in the car properly?

Never mind the break in, a brand new car is not supposed to do this PERIOD! Take it back, tell them that you are aware of the tranny problems and that you don't want it fix, you want your money back.

Take it back to the dealer immediately. By the way, what is the manufacture date of your 2003 TL-S? It's on the sticker by the driver side door pillar.

how steep of a heel was it? When the car is at idle in gear, it produces a certain amount of torque. if the angle is big enough then the torque required to keep the car from rolling is insufficient and would result in your car rolling down the hill.

Agreed. Depending on the steepness of the hill, you may need to do a little two footed driving. Brake with your left while modulating the gas with your right foot.

Hey guys thanks for all the replies. Now I highlight the fact that the slope was not steep at all. I even tested it with my other car which had no problems.

I guess the car is not "brand-spanking" new. It had around 150mi. when i got it.

In addition to that, I havent abused the car in any way.

The date of mfr is: 8/02

Thanks again

Are you sure it's 8/02, not 8/03? If it's really 8/02, then it falls into the tranny "not a recall" warranty extension--e.g. it's at risk and the dealer will replace the tranny at no cost to you.

I never had this problem in my 2002, you should get this looked at by your dealer.

I just got an Automatic Warranty Extension in the mail today for my '99. It list characteristics that, they say, are normal and not normal.
They say this is normal. "Vehicle may not hold its position when stopped on an incline in gear (may roll backward when brake peddal is released). This can occur on most Acura-made vehicles. It is one of the measures used to improve fuel economy."

Yeah i checked again. Its 8/02.
Does this mean i get auto warranty extension?

But the main question is will this problem(which will result many hassles) influence me to return the car and get my money back.

It may be a small linkage problem. Easyly taken care of by adjustment. fifteen years ago I park my brand new Camero on a hill. Next thing I heard was Click,Click,Click, It droped out of park into neutlial. It had less than 200 miles on it. See what excuse the dealership gives you and document for later problems.
Like wise my 03 TLs was Man. 08/02.

I'd be a bit concerned that a bought a "new" car with a build date of more than a year ago. Odometer rollback?

Anyway, besides that, goto the acura owner link and pop in your vin number. You are most likely covered by the extended warrenty.

It was one of the last TL-S in stock around my area. Got it for around 28K+ tax, etc. Everything about the car feels new. The seats havent been broken in or anything.

I agree with a previous post...

Some two foot action would be necessary to get somemore torque into the transmission and wheels. Once the RPM's go up on the engine from idle, it will increase the hydro pressur in the tranny, allowing less (hopefully no) slip.

It depends on the up and down grade. I would imagine the acura's are "light" light on idle torque delivered to the wheels in order to save gas. My old Taurus, you had to mash the brake well to prevent it from creeping, but on certain inclines/decline angles, it would slip untill I got on the gas pedal.

I wouldnt worry about it. I know how new toys can drive you nuts, but everything is different from the pervious vehicle you owned, I am certain!

good luck, - but first of all... ENJOY!!

I wouldn't worry about it, either. The TL-S's torque converter is specifically designed to put almost no load on the engine at idle. It saves fuel when sitting at lights.

Try it in the same place again, only this time, put your foot on the gas to raise engine RPM to 1000 or so. If the car stops rolling, no issue.

i agree. and if you are that concerned about it bring it to the dealer. but what you described isnt really one of the symptoms that you have a bad tranny like the rest of us who have had it replaced. now if it didnt go into gear at all it would be a different story.

The dealer will just pull out their scripted Acura statement "we are unable to replicate the problem .. therefore, there are no problems .. good day"

And good luck trying to get your money back. Our issues have been well documented and neither Acura or the dealer are willing to accept this car is bad!

Don't waste anytime stating your case, have them check the history of the car. Call the previous owner.
