Black tape on window trim wrinkling

I understand the black tape wrinkling on the window trim is a common problem.

My '02 TL-S is out of warranty and the dealer said they do not replace the tape and suggested a body shop to have that area repainted instead. They estimated the cost at $200-$300.

My question is has anyone bought the tape from Acura parts for about $25 and replaced it themselves? The dealer made it sound like it was difficult to do as a lot of door trim/moulding needed to be removed.

I've done a search and found instructions on replacing the door sash trim but nothing on the window tape.

What are you talking about? I really cant think of anything black near the b-pillars that flakes and wrinkles and would need to PAINTED other than the b-pillars themselves, like 01tl4tl is talking about. Unless you mean the trim that goes all the way around the windows. That is black, maybe thats what hes talking about??

yes the trim that goes all the way around. the b pillars dont wrinkle, they just fade/flake. the black trim around the windows is like a black film. its slightly starting to peel on my car all the way at the back

around the top part of the window - that thick black tape looking stuff. mine is flaking and pulling up also. but 8 years of Texas summers will do that to anything!

i dont see why you couldn't do it your self. scrap the tape off and use some goo gone or something similar to remove any film left and then retape it. if you do it yourself let us know, like to see some pics.

Yep, it's the black tape trim around the windows that I am talking about. Has anyone replaced the tape themselves?

if i remember correctly, it looks like its kinda wedged in between 2 peices (to hold it on), which would make it kinda a pain to remove all of it unless u start taking stuff apart.

Don't bother buying teh tap and doing it yourself, its just going to wrinkle and flack off again. Plus its a PITA, best bet is what the dealer said, have a body shop take off the old tap and just paint it black.. Then u don't have to worry about ti wrinkling ever again

I can vouch for it being a PITA. While I haven't replaced mine, when I worked at the dealership, I stopped and talked to a tech while he was replacing some on a TL. Basically they love it because it gets them 4 hours labor time....but the tape is cheap. You have to be VERY careful when you do this. He was using a hair dryer to remove the old tape and as I watched him place the new tape on, it was tedious since you have to get it pretty much perfect.

I think I may try doing this myself. I like the idea of the paint but for only $25, if I can fix it, I might just give it a shot. B-Pillars could be preserved a lot longer if you wax them I think. Just like any other painted surface, the elements take their toll. I'll let you know if I do decide to do this. And I'll try to take pics, but I normally forget to.
