Best Cold Air Intake Filter
Best Cold Air Intake Filter
Hi! I just got my Acura TL-S last week and i am thinking of upgrading to Cold Air Filters.I was wondering what would be a good brand, AEM Filters, HKS, Injen Tech, DC Sports or others.
And why would you suggest and how much would it increase in horsepower.

There are three basic types of intakes you can get:
1)Drop in filter
2)Short Ram intake
3)Cold Air intake (CAI)
The Drop-In filter is simply a high performance replacement for your stock filter cartridge. It is made of foam, and needs periodic cleaning/oiling. I know that both K&N and Comptech make these types of filters. Choose this option if you don't want much increase in sound and want to keep the car closer to stock.
The Short Ram intake replaces your stock air intake and filter box with an aluminum pipe that's a little over a foot long with a conical filter at the end. The filter rests in the engine bay, providing easy access for cleaning and little possibility of accidental water ingestion. AEM, DC sports, INJEN and others make this type of intake and are often sold with a K&N filter included in the kit.
The Cold Air intake is like the Short Ram intake except that it uses a longer pipe to place the filter inside the front bumper of your car. The advantage of this arrangment is that you draw in colder air for your engine, which is denser than hot air and contains more oxygen per volume to better supply your engine. Just be warned that this arrangement requires more frequent filter cleaning and has the possibility of water ingestion when you run into puddles. Bypass valves are recommended for cold air intakes to help prevent accidental water ingestions, but their reliability is also questioned. AEM, DC sports, INJEN and others also make this type of intake and are often sold with a K&N filter.
I personally have an AEM short ram intake. It's louder than stock, but fine for my tastes. I like how the INJEN has a polished pipe, but I figure that the AEM coated pipes are better at resisting heat and would perform bettter.
