Beginning my new LED project

Just sharing some pics of my next project I'm trying to complete.

I'll be replacing the cover with the 02+ clear amber once everything is complete. Which wont be done for another day as tomorrow I assemble the turn signals. Oh and in case your thinking that it doesn't look brite, I'm using a PWM that is set for driving lights....I dont want to take pics of my brake light as I dont want to damage the camera!!! I still see spots after viewing about an hour ago......

Damn That nice!!!

I been looking for Some PCB board and LED, but this all has to be custom made the problem I'm having is getting it to light up brighter when I step on the Brake. Can you give me some advice or where I pick LED like that. Did you custom make that LED or did you cut them light off 1156/1157 LED Brake Light?

I dont know what you have done so far with your project. I bought the PCB breadboard from The Source (Radio shack for Canada) and ordered super flux Telux from ebay (120 pcs). There are still 20 lots on auction. I also am using a Pulse Width modulator (PWM) to control the brightness for the running lights and then its full on with the brake. These are very bright as they are true lumileds (not sure what I'm talking about?....go to hidplanet.com and go to their LED section and read up!).
The rest of the parts I bought from digikey for the voltage regulator, resistors. Oh and I'm using the original wire harness....

Signals will be amber still...which I will work on tomorrow....but I'm getting my Zaino package in so its a toss up on what to do. Also I have already replaced the Signal relay with an electrical one so there are no quick flashing.

Sorry to say, but I doubt I will be doing this mod again. The leds for the brakes alone are about 70 bucks....and once that ebay person sells his 20 kits....thats it...no more....unless he gets more....which I highly doubt. Besides...this was an experiment to see if I can actually do this....seems like I can.

Alright....I worked on the turn signal tonight and installed it. Took some more pics..

Going to bed now

Hey OntarioTL,

It looks AWESOME!

I was actually looking into doing that to my tail light! I'll be posting some of my pics once I decide what kind of LED design I'll do. I was going to go with voltage regulators rather than PWMs. What are the specs of the s-fluxes? (forward voltage, forward current)

A question about the tail light, did you have to bake it? Did Honda seal the taillight with glue as well?

Thanks

Hey Mike,

Lets teach or make me some of those. I really like what you have done. LED cluster! Thanks a lot.

The LED taillights are so sick... I searched around long time ago to find a set of LED tails but no lucky.

I want them really bad

Here's a link on wiring an LED circuit for an LED brake light.

Thanks for the compliments. I'll be curious to see what you do with yours. Now don't get confused with voltage regulator and PWM. PWM dont regulate, its more of a on/off switch and thats all it does. You give it 14 volts...it gives you 14 volts. I used a regulator so I dont end up blowing any LEDS. The Sharp fixed 12 volt 4 pin regulator is highly regarded for mods. from I might start using them for the cluster mod but I would have to make more updates to my mod to accomidate.

Anyways, the lumileds superflux's are 2.5V, 70mA. And these are the real deal...not the knockoffs mainly on ebay. I bought 120 pack of them...used about 114 of them for both tailights. Since I couldn't find amber superflux's that had a good lumen output I went with 10mm 12degree 60K clear amber leds. They require a little more alignment as the viewing angle kinda sucks...but they work well...I have them in my headlights as well.
Now luckily for us Acura TL owners, they used butyl to seal our tails instead of glue welding them together. So baking at 200F for 10 minutes does the trick to separate them apart....but take your time. You force them apart and you could damage the lens.

Thanks for sharing that design....its looks good but I hesitate to use one resistor for all the leds. I prefer to have the leds in series maximum of 4 with a resistor and parallel to the rest of the sets.
Alright..need to bake the right side tail and start assembly.

I have to say it again...awesome work!

One more question, will this be done b4 the Woodbine Meet? If so, I want to see them in action.

It all depends on the values being used I guess.. The diagram is rated for a 12 LED cluster, I'm no EE but I'm sure you could get the right combination for what you needed. This was really just to show how the brake light cicuitry would work, glad I could help.

Damn, just saw the turn signal update and that looks great too! I am very impressed!

I still don't know why aftermarket companies have not made these for our cars. They got them for Accords, Civics, and other cars. I guess there isn't enough demand for our vehicle for LED conversions.

I say we get an online petition going for a major aftermarket company that makes LED plug n play assemblies and see what they would do. I mean, if hundreds of us 2nd Gen folks ban together, that would be a lot of money they may not want to pass up!!

LOOKS SWEET!! thats what i wanted to do but i dont have the know how lol wasnt sure about brightness ans stuff too..

one suggestion though, if you look at it with the case on you can see the chrome reflector behind the brakelights sticking out at the corners, maybe you should paint em black or the same colour as the PCB board, give it a more integrated look

I prefer to keep it the red chrome that is original. The red chrome reflects the lumileds light better.

watch your load points. those are the areas that will be the point of failure. good luck keeping the heat levels in check. it's very hard to do.

Another update.....shit happens!!!

My worst nightmare comes true.....removing the plastic lens from the 02+ tail...I ended up breaking in two. My fault really (one of the locking tabs where still locked)....and this is why I wont do it for someone else. Too risky. An order was placed at the stealership today.

But all is not lost......I ordered some better amber superfluxes for my signals....I wasnt happy with what I had....so one day delay to put them together and a new revision begins. The brakes are fine though...

No they will be ready for Saturday...as long as my tailight and new amber superflux leds come in tomorrow. Both tailights are on the car now, with one being clear for amber and the other with amber colour...so it looks silly but at least I can drive the car now. Looks like I wont be Zaino'ing the car for the show, but I will give it Zaino for the interior and just a regular wash for Sat. Tomorrow is tailight priority.

As for brightness.....the brakes and running lights are nice and bright during the day...they dont get washed out. As predicted the amber sucks right now...but with my new amber leds coming in....that should solve the issue.

Well since I don't really want to do another set myself......and if I did....oh its gonna cost you!!!! Anyways....yes I'll try to do a DIY....I think Digikey website has Lite-on superfluxs that would do the trick for the brakes and turn signal...so it is possible to do with parts. The hardest part is removing the plastic lens from the brake light as I'm living proof...things can go wrong. Oh and if you dont know how to solder...well then that will be just as hard.

Hopefully all will be complete and people going to the meet at Woodbine will be able to check it out.
