help. ive been gettin 16-17mpg lately in my type-s. yes i do drive aggresively and i do take it into vtec once or twice a day. i mainly do city driving, but should my mpg still be this low??? i thought i should at least be gettin around 20mpg. i got the car about a month ago and its been the same at every gas fillup. is something wrong or should i jus granny drive it?? i used to drive an explorer the same way and i would get around 15mpg or so. any help is welcome.

I have a 99TL and sometimes I get around the same mileage. But anyways, check that your tires are properly inflated. Also, you can try using different brands of gasoline,... this can change your mpg.

Something is defintely not right with that 99 (cant speak for other model years). I get a consistent 26 mpg with mixed city/hiway driving (430 miles with 16.5 gallons). It has been that way since I owned it. Things I do to keep it running well is:
BG fuel system maintenence - 15k
Trans fluid change - 15k
Complete engine system cleaning - you know the machine they hook up to your car to suck out all of the leftover 'bad' oil, run some detergent through it, and replace the oil with new. - 15k
Coolant flush - 15k

These may be extreme precautions but frankly cars are expensive and I need this to last me for a long time. BTW, I have 75k on the car now with virtually ZERO visits to the repair shop...that includes brakes, tranny's, rotors...all the #$%^ that goes wrong with these cars based on the message board. Not meant to brag but I just wanted to assure the drivers that Acura did make some good vehicles in '99

Seems a tad low.. but not too bad...

Whenever I'm doing mainly city driving my mpg is around 20-21 but again.. there's usually highway still mixed in there...

Normally my mpg is around 25 as I do about 95% highway driving. I've never done a lot of city driving on one tank....but it still sounds like 16mpg is a little low....

That sticker on your car before you bought it reads 19 mpg for the city, so how can you possibly getting 20 mpg with the way you drive? Try not to drive so aggressive, but not like a granny and hit the freeway, I'm sure you will get around mid 20's.

I get around 240 - 260 to a tank, with a '99 TL, but that's probably because I live in city filled with hills, turns, and stop signs everywhere.

It's not that surprising to get 19mpg. DO you go uphill alot? Do you drive in stop and go traffic a lot? Consider how heavy the TL is, it sounds right that the car drinks up that much gas.

For me I usually get about 23-24mpg and im 1/2 on the GSP and half in the city (mainly either on route 1 or drivin around on the inner roads to avoid tolls <--- aint bout to pay a buck everytime when i can get around it). My gas mileage gets worse when i floor it . I usually get about 320miles to the tank (before the fuel indicator thing comes on) with about 14gallons.

Another question, why the hell does that fuel indicator light come on for me at around 13.5gallons? its supposed to be a 17gallon tank. it shud only come on when theres 2gallons left, not when i got close to 4left (thats about 100miles!!!)

Well, to make u feel better i get around the same gas milage as you do. I get 240 miles for 14 gal = 17.1 miles/gal. I drive about 65 % street and 35% freeway. On freeway, nothing below 80 MPH...which is VERY uneffiecent fuel wise, but that's the price to pay when u r going fast. On streets, hit VTEC often...RPM usually max at 3500, and usually around 3000 or lower.

You want better gas milage, let me tell you how to do it. CHANGE UR DRIVING HABITS! Simple as that! I can't change my habits, i just like driving fast (not wreckless, but fast), i'm not late or anything, just that i just like it.

But i have a TL-S

I had a 99 and got 22-24 no matter how or where I drove the car. Now, I have an 03 TLS and get 26-32 depending where I drive the car.

It has to be correct unless the gas pumps are wrong. I maintain a spreadsheet (OCD maybe) that chronicles all my fill-ups, the price per gallon, miles on the trip meter, gallons used and the driving done on the tank. eg; Commute to work, trip to New York, etc... I believe the #'s are accurate!

The TLS is so easy on gas, it is a pleasure.

Great car, disappointing mpg

I love my '03 TL-P, but mpg is about 15-20% less than my '97 Avalon under the same conditions - and that's with 93 octane in the TL, 89 in the Avalon. Different cars, but close in weight and power. What does Toyota know that Honda doesn't?

You may want to try a couple of things, first take a highway drive someplace. Try to avoid rapid acceleration and keep your speed consistantly between 60 and 70mpg and see what you get. It should be between 25 and 28 mpg. This will tell you if it is your normal driving habit that is getting you such poor gas mileage.

As someone mentioned correct tire inflation makes a big difference, as does what kind of gas you use. Try changing the brand, if you always get gas from the same station, the quality may be poor. Switch to a less restrictive air filer like a K & N. Keep your oil clean. I use Mobil 1 0w-30 full syn and consistantly get between 28 and 30 mostly highway between 70 and 80mph with pretty bad stop and go traffic the remainder of the time

My advice is to avoid stopping once you get the car up to speed. It takes a lot of energy to get 4000 lbs of dead weight in motion.

It might be your oil. My dealer had been putting 5W30 in my car, and I was averaging around 17-18 mpg city. Then they finally got their hands on 5W20 and started using that for my oil changes and my mpg when up to about 19-20. Unfortunately last oil change they put 5W30 again.

PS: I would change my own oil and put in what I want, but I get free oil changes for the life of my car at my dealership so....
