Beefier trunk spring to handle spoiler

hey all:

Do any of you guys know how much the stronger spring to handle the extra weight of spoiler costs? I just checked how much it is to have it replaced with the dealership and they told me the part is $37 and installation is $40. $77 to replace the spring sounds a bit expensive. Anyone know a cheaper place that can do this in the bay area?

Thanks!

Its actually two springs and the dealership has a special tool to do it. Yu can do it without but I wouldnt. You saved money by buying and aftermarket wing it sounds like...but the aftermarket wing doesnt come with srpings. Acura spoilers come with the springs in the box. There is a lot of tension on the springs so if you do it yourself..be careful. I have the tool and still hate doing them lol.

yep, I have heard horror stories of people busting their fingers trying to install these springs themselves. That's why I prefer to have the professional do it. But $77 sounds a bit steep. Maybe I will ask around other dealerships. Thanks

I have OEM spoilers and no additional springs. It works without needing additional spring tension.

Yep OEM spoilers with stock trunk springs still springs open.

Yup, pay over $500 to $600 (!) for factory spoiler or get an identical looking spoiler aftermarket from spoilerdepot.com for $200 painted. The choice to me was obvious. Who needs the trunk to fly up anyway, as long as it unlocks. I just use my hand to open it up. No biggie...

it doesnt flip up completely, it unlocks then lifts up about 6 inches and that is exactly how I like it. I don't need to launch any thing off the spoiler

So if you get an aftermarket spoiler that looks like the OEM one, it will have problems with the trunk?

You can buy the spring installation tool for 5 bux.

5 of the best bux I ever spent...........it can be used on every car Ive encountered with the torsion spring type trunk lid.

Was able to install the new springs (that came with my OEM spoiler) in under 5 minutes.

I think you can get it at handaaccessories.com, as well as just asking the dealer (list price is 5 bux, so its not really that expensive to pick up at your local dealer).

Dont sue, just go back and tell them to install the stronger torsion springs. They sell them for about $40, so they cant cost the dealer more than $20. With the ridiculous price the dealer charges for the OEM spoiler, this should be taken care of asap. at no charge to you.

I got the wings west after market spoiler, and it is so heavy that when I unlock the trunk, all I can hear is a little clicking sound indicating the trunk is open, but the trunk does not move or pop open at all, not even half an inch. I got my gf the spoiler depot spoiler for her CL-S and her trunk is fine w/o changing the spring. I guess spoiler depot spoiler is lighter....

I have dealer installed OEM spoiler too, It only pops up partially. It doesn't fly up like my old Civic trunk catapult. which I don't mind because I perfer it that way. I always wonder if my dealer install the new trunk tension rods tho. My friend install the aftermarket spoiler on his TL and when he pops the trunk, it locks it self. So either the OEM is so much lighter then aftermarket that it doesn't need a new tension rod (even tho it comes with it) or the tension rods are suppose to work that way as to pop it up partially.

Wait till you get your head banged up by falling trunk lid while you stuck your head underneath.

The trunk lid banged up my head a couple of times by the wind when I had my replica spoiler w/o heavy-duty torsion bar.

If the people who need the trunk spoiler spring tool live nearby me, I can lend it to 'em. Just shoot me an email and arrange for a time and place.

I have the OEM spoiler and it pops up only a few inches when I hit the trunk release button. Seems like this is how it is supposed to be. And no problems keeping the trunk open either (even with the wind).
