Talking battery change w/ surprises!

yesterday morning i cranked the s up and noticed a slight pause before firing....
thought it was time to change the battery after 4 years!
got a costco battery to replace the old.

fired up the s and no problem, pause disappeared. then comes the problems --

1. radio code --- after trying multiple times, acura service, dealership, forum search -- ah, pull antenna off ! done..with minor scratches from the tip of a screw

i never bad mouth people as a rule of thumb but -
Acura Service Rep @ 800# --- Terrible --- I have the serial number and radio code card, VIN card with me while asking for help. You offered no advice and engaged in a directional conversation as if the radio was stolen and I was the thief!

btw appreciate Michael from South Coast Acura for the help too

an advertisement for --South Coast Acura,CA-- never once had any complains over the 4 years I have taken my car for service. service department has changed but great people still work there. parts department offers discounts --

2. sporadic idling --- didn't think too much about it

3. tried to put into reverse --- reverse doesn't back up, after playing around with the gears.. finally existed the garage.

4. now here is the scary part --- as I am taking my son over to my mother's place--- while at the stop light --- 3 times idled itself off ---- and twice powered itself off while I am driving.... No Power Steering + Acceleration = No Control !

after changing the battery has anyone ever experienced these problems ? or just

a coincidence.. or is the ECU remapping and its a temporary thing ???

thanks for the feedback,

i am a bit hesitant about driving it --

I have swapped battery many time and never had anything like that happen. The idle might be a tiny bit rough while the computer is adjusting but never had it go to the point of stalling. Did you try the old battery? Maybe that new battery is not taking a charge right and is taxing your alt. That is the only thing I could think of if all of the studden changing the battery made these problems appear.

I say you should disconect the battery again when the engine is cold .....
then reconect it and start the car ... let it idles for 10-15 min ... then test
drive the car around the block .... . good luck

Reseting the PCM is a procedure for the computer to relearn the idle. Below is the PCM reset procedure:

1. Pull the No. 13 clock backup fuse (7.5A) from the passenger side fuse box for 10 seconds - put the fuse back in.

2. Start the engine (engine must be cold) and hold it at 3,000 RPM with no load (in park with AC controls off) until the radiator fan comes on, or the engine temp reaches 194 Deg. F.

3. Let the engine idle for about 5 minutes with the throttle full closed.

After I did the above procedures my Acura idles perfectly even when I kick the AC on. After test driving my car the thorttle response is smooth - it's like driving a new car .

P.S : follow this steps

Vzupnguyen : when temp is up to normal and since your car is not rolling(no wind) the
radiator fan will go on .... I say around 2-3 min depend on the temp
of Huntington Beach that day ..

This could be a faulty ignition switch.

When the car shuts down, do you lose dash gauges and power windows but the radio is still on?

If so, it's more than likely the ignition switch.

The Search feature on this forum. Also its in the Helms manual. Something i believe every one should spend 70 bucks on if they are even slightly a DIYer

Its possible the ecu did it too since he didnt do the releard procedure. Ive had it happen before with outdoing the relearn. the engine will run rough for awhile

just got back from Vegas - thanks for all your responses.

talked to a friend of mine that works for Toyota Programming;
ECU does not have to relearn, acts as RAM like on a computer.

not the ignition switch cause everything works properly, thanks.

haven't performed the procedure of reseting the fuse yet
let you know how that goes....

hm....good excuse to tell the wifey I need a new type-S.

after some time of driving the ecu will learn also. seting it to a relearn procedure first thing will keep it from rough idle and stalling out

check your grounds man. could be the problem right there. or the battery is defective. i changed to an optima redtop and when I installed it, it was nothing, but good things since.

How can you get the ECU to relearn? I had my tranny replaced and they replaced the ECU as well. Could that be causing my terrible gas mileage?

quick update -

took the car to a local mechanic that specializes in Japanese cars since my mechanic closed his shop awhile back....

so the shop tried to replicate the symptoms -- nothing. alittle annoyed cause when the mechanic came back my s smelled terrible. probably punched it every light.

couldn't reproduce the problem..anyways, will try pulling the fuse tomorrow

ill probably give my friend a call at XS.

let you know the outcome if any.

uhh, my cousing has a 1st gen and there was some known ignition issue where the car would just stall in the middle of driving, etc .... but I am assuming yours is not a 1st gen.
