babying your tranmission

I know some of you have complained of automatic transmission failures on your TL. The key is to keep your tranmission cool.

Below is an excellent article on how to avoid automatic tranmission failures.

excellent post, but you may be flamed by a lot of people too

i tried to explain this a while and i got nothing but negative replies, many of the people say that when a car is designed, they're supposed to take all the crap the owner throws at them... well

anyways, i hope people will take the more professional person's advice, and not bash him because he's canadian!

many people abuse their cars and not admit it
some of my friends do that, but when crap happens, they just blame the cars not themselves, oh well

i also got called a moron by oblio (who i respected a lot, but nevermind now) for suggesting people to baby their transmissions to possibly extend the transmissions' lives, that kind of sucks

the basic idea is not to drive at low rpm at high gear...

What about stop and go traffic? If anyone in PA/NJ is familiar with route 22....well...in populated areas, it's the main road where everything is...and that means lights every other block.

Would it be better to keep it in D4 to prevent overdrive from kicking in, since you never really get above 40/45 mph?

I believe the point of the article was that if you are pulling loads or climbing steep hills, that you should keep the transmission in a lower gear...not for everyday driving.

But if there is an inherent design flaw in the transmission, you are just delaying the inveitable.

I say drive as you normally drive, have fun with the car. When the tranny dies, and odds are it probably will. get it replaced before your warranty runs out.

Damn that sucks. I have almost 29k on the original tranny and I've been mostly drivng it in 5th (SS-mode) so it doesnt downshift and I can save gas.

Actually, I must apologize for calling you a moron. I was out of line. It's just that I get sick of posts where people insinuate that bad driving causes the tranny failure. This is a line of crap.

Think about this. We have this forum, there are thousands of members, other than tranny problems and squeaks/rattles, what else has anyone ever complained about?

The tranny is unfortunatly the "weakest link" in the TL-S. The tranny failures in the normal TL pale in comparison, and are the truely "it could happen to any make/model car" failures.

The TL-S has a problem, and it is still happening to this day to members. I stopped updating my tally post because I started it to show that the failures were not a fluke, and that has been shown.

Other members will have these failures, and that is just the way of the world.

ANYTHING you can do, babying the tranny, keeping it cool, will obviously help, and you should not be flamed for suggesting this.

HOWEVER, those of us who bought the TL Type-S for $30K+ and expected a reliable car that we did not have to baby or worry about cooling the tranny feel that we were sold a deficient product.

So, anyway, STi, sorry, you are obviously NOT a moron, and all TL Type S owners should just drive and when it happens, deal with it. A lot of us already have.

If I wanted to baby a car I would go buy a kia or dawoo. Honestly we go out and buy sport sedans for a reason. Acura should redesign the flaw and replace everyones transmissions. I never raced my car or drove it really bad. Fast and WOT yes but heck it's a sports sedan and it should be able to handle it. Maybe acura should install comptech tranny coolers for everyone.
