Auto trouble code reader

Auto trouble code reader
I'm thinking of getting a code reader and it cost from $35 shipped to over $100. Has any one got thier own one? Cuz autozone and other auto parts store no long to do code reading service in LA.
I thought $35 is pretty cheap to have it but only worry it'll work or not. Sellers claim it work on any brand post-1996 cars and trucks.

I have an AutoXRay 4000 but as of recently I've just been using my laptop; just need the OBD -> serial interface which can be had for under $30 on eBay.

Dont expect it to get the codes that acura can pull with theirs
Sometimes its cheaper to let them diagnose a check engine light if you cant
troubleshoot your way thru it

Don't know where you are but stores like AutoZone can pull your code for free if that's all you want. $100 to diagnose the CEL more sounds like them pulling the codes AND finding the reason why the code was thrown (by analyzing any freeze frame data and logical troubleshooting).
If you get the OBD->serial interface and write some code, you can do pretty much anything the Acura scanners can do. What you don't have is the documentation however on what special codes they're pulling....and that may be hard to come by.

I have the the Actron CP9125 and it's saved my ass many times. Without a doubt the best tool I've ever purchased.
Especially when you get those phantom CELs that just need a quick reset, it's invaluable. When I did my TypeS IM swap I probably had to reset the CEL 20 times. Having to disconnect the battery and wait would have been ridiculous.
Get it, I guarantee you will love having it especially if you're performance modding your car.
