is it possible to wire the stock audio controls that are mounted on the steering wheel to control an after market head unit (KDC-MP225)??

Yes, I think there is an adapter for this.... maybe someone else will fill you in or you might want to do a search...

Edit: I think Alpine has decks that work with our steering controls...

this company makes one....http://peripheralelectronics.com/2002/home.asp

but there is a delay from when you push the button and it does anything, so most people dont mess with it.

yes kenwood has a unit that will allow us to use our steering wheel controls. ive been meaning to get it for my headunit but never remember to. (my dealer has it)
as for if it will work with that unit? you will have to contact your local kenwood store or contact kenwood to find out.
