Anyones tranny ever live?
#3
Some people haven't had a problem at all, some people have. Your mom might be lucky. Are you talking about the 100K warranty on the tranny? As far as I know, the tranny is only covered for 7 years or 100K miles, whichever comes first. The tranny, if it does get replaced has an Acura replaced parts warranty of 12K miles from the time it was replaced.

the longest i know of is over 150k miles on the original before it died.
my first made it to like 75k. the other 2 made it like 40k
you do know the trtanny has a 7 year 100k warranty, or is she past the mileage?

OH naw... I didn't have dealer check it. I had my uncle do it after my car had a close call accident... the surburban lady only hit the skin leaving no structural damage. We just got curious and decided to see for ourselves.

I too passed the warranty mark, so be worried about it, but plan ahead. I got a tranny cooler installed and I try not to put too much stress on the tranny. So far I"m considering a rebuild on the next failure, hopefully it will be less than 5k or else I'll go with the CL-S manual engine/tranny swap.

i believe most of the TL's tranny would live for very long
Acura sold a lot of TL and most of them are not driving aggressive at all, if every tranny blows then they are in deep shit
the defective rate should be about 2-3% at most

I don't use the SS feature on my gf's 00 TL-P. Am I "less" at risk for a transmission failure or does it not matter much if I use the SS or not. In what other ways can a tranny be abused if just staying in D5? So far no tranny problems here at 60k miles but the fluid smelled burnt when I changed it at 60k (first owner probably thought it would be okay to not change it).

Reading the latest Consumer Reports on the 2001 and 2002 Acura TL, the failure rate among 650,000 CR readers who own TL's range between 10 and 15 percent. This is only for the first two years of production of the 5 speed automatic, not the 4 speed that preceeded it. Mine went at 68005 miles, now have 78150 miles, and only have slightly rough shifts when cold from time to time. Hey, a nearly four year old car with almost 80,000 miles and that is the only problem - covered by Honda - not bad. Always want perfection, but Honda stood behind their product and for that I feel lucky.

If you don't use the SS feature you are MORE at risk of a failure. The ECU will try and shift the transmission as soon as possible to get to overdrive to increase fuel economy. This greatly increases the amount of shifts and thus, the wear on the clutch packs (the weakest link of the transmission). Also, if the car is in overdrive at a low MPH it will downshift much more frequently when you apply even a small amount of throttle.
The key to our transmission's health is limiting the number of shifts.

My 02 TLS is still on its first with 36,400 miles on it + oil jet kit. Although it has been randomly kicking (shifting hard) out of second into third lately only time will tell.

Turns out both our cars have no tranny problems so, like I said above, the tranny problem is not something all TL's or other Hondas have to deal with.

Wait so EVERY SINGLE 2nd Gen TL has a 7 year / 100k mile powertrain warranty? When i said my moms warranty expired, i meant the 4 year / 50k mile one. If her tranny dies, does she get hers replaced? She currently has 4x,000 miles and its 4 years old.

Another way is to call your local dealer and give them your VIN# to have them check if it falls under the extended warranty program.

well, i stilll have my 1st tranny, 84K already on my 00 TL. And, I just came back from Acura. They said my transmission is in good condition, but they still put on an oil jet kit just to be safe.

use the SS mode to coax it into the next gear. The higher the RPM's the
hotter the clutch pack will get in transition. It appears that if you use the
SS to upshift early it might actually help. I do this in low speed traffic as
the tranny ECU tends to run the RPM's too high for my tast and I am always
wanting it to upshift. From what I understand the ECU will not let you lug the
engine. It will downshift if RMP's get too low.
I agree with limiting the number of shifts.
