OTC makes good tools/equipment. That one should work just fine but you have to purchase the solution. Some have said that Seafoam or Berriman's B12 is the same stuff.

Unless you are opening a shop- there is no need for all the equipment

The seafoam diy- last pages- have the current correct info on main vac port
Deep Creep (seafoam in aerosol) has more directions on cleaning engine than we have been doing- read it and try the high idle blasting of carbon

Redline SI-1 fuel injector cleaner works really well in the GAS tank
With it or seafoam- use 1 bottle/can in 1/2 tank of gas for max cleaning doseage
'Treats up to 25 gallons' does not mean at cleaning strength!!
Do that on 2, 1/2 tanks of gas, a bottle in each and you will have spotless injectors

Do the intake manifold with seafoam or bg44 or wynns and that gets the rest of the internal parts clean
Pull the intake manifold OFF the car and clean the intake runners and EGR ports if you want to do it right

if you go to a shop with an injector cleaning machine fro 100-150$$
- they pour 1 can seafoam in 1/2 gallon of gas in a can- hook it to the fuel system and let the car idle 20-30 minutes- then do a blaster drive.

Look at the seafoam can- directions for shop use right on it!
Might be a different color can at the shop but....

104+ Maximum Octane Boost. Cleans Fuel system Injectors and Pistons. You can Definatly tell the difference. and i was reading about the J-Series engine and there is a theory that higher octane in our cars gives it 10-15hp. could be placebo but it seems like it.

Techron is another good cleaner- Be sure to use it at whatever its max allowable is
like 1 bottle to 8 gallons for example

The amount of it in chevron-texaco gas is just a maitenance dose- will help keep it clean after its been blasted clean

An intake manifold cleaning is important along with the TB plate

you have to understand octane ratings are about a fuels resistance to pre-detonation.. Igniting before the piston is in the correct ~almost to the top of its stroke~ position
Want that right,, before the fuel erroneously ignites thru compression generated heat rather than applied spark

car gas starts as 87 and secret stuff is added that retards combustion and increases octane to 89 91 94

A normally aspirated TL or any car not on supercharger or turbo does not benefit from super high octange gas, 91 to 94 is fine for us..
94 at track day just because you are running full throttle for long periods and asking a lot from the engine

Hey 01tl4tl I just took off my intake manifold and see a lot of carbon build up. I want to clean it but don't want to mess anything up! Could you please explain the best way to clean it. Would it be good to remove the egr valve so that something can clean it all the way through? The Deep clean is arosol would be the best or just dump some seafoam on there and start scrubbing.

THANKS A LOT!

Take the IM off the car and hose it down.
Use some Carb cleaner, a brush, water and a towel. Just start spraying away toward the carbon build up.

I wouldn't mess with the EGR valve, you might screw up the solenoid and start throwing codes.

Or...do what I'm doing and block off the EGR

dont block the egr!

Follow the cleaning procedure shown in the DIY for thermoblock spacer install and egr cleaning
3 cans of carb clean and a toothbrush-
or take the manifold off at the end of day, spray with deep creep and let it soak the crud overnight- in the morning rinse it out and scrub whatevers left

You do have to remove the sensors and stuff attached to the manifold
Will still need to do the gas tank and intake vac methods to get everything good and clean-have fun!

dont randomly spray and expect a good result

Acura says to have the throat of the manifold up and spray each egr port and intake runner, then flip it throat down and repeat- then rinse both directions a few times to make sure NO residue -especially WATER is left inside
Compressed air,, or hair dryer on cool are better than just sitting in the sun- rotate the manifold to be sure all the corners are empty

Just did the whole cleaning and I've got much better throttle response! I just took off the top metal plate that says 3.2 on it and there was a lot of carbon build up so I went to Walmart and bought 4 cans of carb clean and started spraying. It really came out pretty easy. With towel in hand started to soak up all residue. Then I took off the metal tube thing on the right that had 2 screws that covers the hole. There was a lot of build up on that too. Cleaned it and dried it. Then took off the huge sensor that the hole on the intake runs to and poured in some seafoam and WOW was there a lot of crap coming out!

I even said hey honey (wife) come and check out how much crap is coming out and she said wow and went back inside the house. Women just don't get how fun all this stuff is

ANYWAY let it all dry out and cleaned up and put back together. Took off intake to TB and sprayed the TB with deep creep. Did the seafoam in the intake vacuum hose whole thing (still smoked all over the place! ) Added one more full can in the gas tank with less than 1/2 tank gas. ONLY POURED ABOUT 4oz OF THE REMAINING SEAFOAM IN THE CRANK CASE BECAUSE I'M CHANGING MY OIL TODAY!

Long story short my baby should be clean as a whistle! Did I do something wrong and should I have done something else that you can think of? 04 with 70K on it.

Thanks everyone for your time and advice!!!!

Sorry, by manifold off do you mean taking the whole IM off or just the metal plate that says 3.2 on it?

try the DIY method-with main vac port for max results

removing the top of the manifold is for when you remove the manifold to to a full EGR passage and intake runner cleaning
