Lightbulb Anyone run their TL-S open header?

Wussup guys. For the racers out there. Has anyone ever tried to run their TL-S with no exhaust just the headers? I was thinking about doing this to race my friend's fixed up 528i BMW. What kind of power gains should I expect from this? I'm guessing this car has lots of power that's being bottled up in that restrictive exhaust.

Hello,

From what I hear from these board guys is that the exhaust on the current TL-S is pretty free flowing and non-restrictive. I don't really know/never heard of just using the headers... could there be some sort of safety issue with this?

sorry if i sound like a newbie.. im still new to the world of fixing up cars =)

You might lose power - any resonance caused by the "untuned" exhaust will decrease the flow, both in terms of quantity and velocity.

Plus, if you lower the backpressure, you may gain a few horses, and lose the same amount of torque. That will decrese your acceleration rate.

How bout running only with the downpipes, but no muffler. That way you stil maintain exhaust flow.

I think you are pursuing something that will produce less than its investment. The issue on this car is not getting air out, it is getting more air (and thus fuel) in.

If you want power gains, work the other end - port matching to header, polished intake tract, etc. This will be pricey and provide modest gains only.

And again, this will produce horsepower, but not much effect on torque. Unless you are planning to race in stock class, you won't see much benefit at the low and mid range RPM, which is where it is at on the street.

TL-S already has low-restrict exhaust. An aftermarket exhaust may have no effect what so ever. Maybe 1 - 2 HP gain. I even remember reading an article that stated an aftermarket exhaust doesn't even give any HP gain on a '98 Jetta VR6.

C&D also put Borla exhaust on their Seville STS, but they found that there are no HP gain, also...

I believe the Type-S has a freer flowing catalytic converter. The stuff about losing torque when you lose backpressure is absolutely true.

Hey, Andy so would you say that an intake is more worth the money than an exhaust? How about on turbocharged cars? I wonder what kind of power I would get on my S4 if I removed the pipe and muffler. I think an N/A car might lose too much low end torque.
