Is anyone here running straight pipes?

I was wondering if anyone deleted the mufflers and welded in straight pipes. My buddy with his Z4 did it and it sounds freaking amazing. defi better than an aftermarket exhaust. Im curious as to how loud this is and if there is any loss of low end power.

^I believe he wanted to know if anyone had removed ALL the mufflers (including the real duals.) TONS of people have removed just the mid-muffler/resonator (including me, for a week or 2) On our cars, I think no mufflers would sound like crap. But I could be wrong...

I have straight pipe inserts for the comptech mufflers (makes the muffler a straight thru with no baffles). In a simple word its LOUD. There is no loss in low end, but the resonance and sound is not something you want on a daily basis unless your at the track

All resonators are gone, and i have headers. If you removed teh mufflers it would be the same. Thats basically what the inserts do. The slide in so that none of the exhaust goes into the baffles.

Did you make those inserts yourself? Or was that something Comptech made? I've only ever seen quiet insert tips.

Made them my self. Post 7 shows them.

I believe they will only work with the older comptech mufflers. Ive noticed the newer ones have a bend in them and wont allow the insert. If you look into the muffler and its straight thru they will work. Very very easy to make.

Dang, the video is no more... I would like to hear our cars w/ no mufflers...

I deleted the resonator at the same time I had my Comptechs installed. Also, I have an intake, which can lower your gas mileage if you're throttle happy
With what I have now, I have not noticed any decrease in gas mileage. And yes, the car responds quicker and is a bit faster. (That's mostly because of the intake, not the exhaust). Removing a resonator isn't going to give you any real performance gains, it will just sound a bit nicer.

They both do the same thing. They both reduce the cabin sound. The res is the smaller one closes to the cat

My gosh. That sounds awesome. Is it really that bad daily driving? The second video doesn't seem to bad. (Louder) exhaust noise I can handle, it's the constant deep drone that irritates me.
I don't think I could to it to my Comptech's, because like you said, I believe there is a bend within the muffler...
Now, are your mufflers basically useless, since there is a straight pipe going through them?

Its not the noise in the car thats bad. Its the drone.

No the mufflers arent useless. Those are just inserts. I can pull them out and put them in in 20 seconds or less. They just slide in and attach with a screw just like the quiet tip inserts

THAT was the video that inspired me when I had my TL! So I did the same exact thing...(Chris you da man )

To those of you out there...the drone was not that bad. You eventually get used to it. I miss that exhaust!

If anyone is thinking of doing the same set up...JUST DO IT! It's the best sounding set up for the TL in my opinion.

Haha, no way! That's what my setup sounds like. (Mines a little quieter w/ a 18" resonator) I've never heard it from the outside though. All I hear is the deepness from the cabin.
I really want to try the straight pipe thing! I'm gonna check to see if there is a bend in the muffler. (Although, I really don't want to drill a hole in those beautiful tips....

*EDIT*
There's no bend in the actual muffer, I don't think...
Does the straight pipe have to go through the muffler and into the exhaust pipe so NO air can get into the muffler chamber??? Because I'm not sure I can do that.

The hole in the tip doesnt go all the way thru. Its teh way comptech designed the quiet tip insert to be mounted. The pipe is the 18" stuff you can find in a auto parts store for doing repairs. One end is flared. If your running comptech mufflers you just slide teh piece in. (nont remember if its 2.25 or 2.5 dia)

I slammed on them cause i wanted to stop fast. Thats what they are for. If it was bad for the car they wouldnt let you do it. You know how many 140+ to near zero stops that car has made? MANY and never a issue. Rotors never warped with Less than 60k on them
