Post Anybody raced Audi S4?

My friend has an Audi S4, and he's always asking me to race him on the track $$$. I don't know what's gonna happen. Even though he's got 250hp under his hood, I heard the new S4 is a killer.
Should I try it?

One word for you.....NO

A stock S4 does 0-60 in a second less than a TLS and if your friend has chipped his S4, he will blow your doors off even more.

Cool

True an S4 is faster than a TLS, but there's no way it's a whole second faster in 0-60. (see May issue of Motor Trend)
S4 0-60 in 5.9 sec
TLS 0-60 in 6.28 sec
Difference = .38 sec

Question

How can it be much faster with 10 less horsepower? Granted it comes with a manaul and a TLS is an automatic, but to say that it's "much faster" is completely ludricrous.

The 0-60 numbers that I have seen show the TLS with a 0-60 in 6.4 sec and the S4 doing it in 5.6. Regardless of what the numbers say, if your friend has a S4 quatro, be careful. However, the S4 is a different class of car performace wise and money wise.

TL-S is no match for chipped S4.
The only S4 that you may have chance beating would be a stock automatic S4 with a dumb driver.

I was just checking Audi's website, and I decided I'm not gonna race him for $, even thought he's got the automatic. This car is no joke. Check for the performance list for yourself. I'll do it for fun. I wish TL-S came in manual.

The coolest thing about S4, besides the performance, is the dual-color interior. I wish my Aegean Blue had Black-Blue Leather seats, floor mats and door trim. That would be kewl.

But no regrets, I love my baby. If I had more money to spend, I would've gotten myself CLK55 or M5. Please fellow TL-S owners, don't blame me for dreaming about other cars. It's like women: You can go out with Pamela Anderson(with makeup) and still be dreaming about Carmen Electra.

I drove in my buddies chipped manual S4, and it made my GS400 seem like a pig. Pull off the line was nice, but it was SICK as it got faster. It pulled to 110 like it was never going to stop.

You may lose the race...in fact, you will lose the race, but remember, you paid alot less to be lined up next to him anyway!!
Besides...he doesn't have an in-dash 6 disc changer and a navigation system!! You do!!

Oh man can I smell the smoke now...

The S4 would cream a TL-S. A chip'd S4 would utterly destroy it (and there is no way to tell on the outside!), especially on a road course.

I wanted an S4, but it is too expensive and TOO SMALL!......but a guy can dream right.

race your friend, but I wouldnt do it for money.

You guys all forget how exciting it is to race someone in the first place w/ our TL-S's. Granted, the S4 w/ the forced induction outta those TWO turbos will pull significantly harder w/ a manual than an automatic TL-S .. but hell, GO RACE HIM AND SEE HOW WELL YOU CAN HANG WITH HIM. If you read my post about me vs. the C36, the coolest part of the story is that I hung w/ the MB no prob, and that made me think .. hmmm.. $30,000 TL-S vs. $55,000 MB C36 .. no bad! I certainly didn't see the $25,000 difference. Go race your buddy and see if you can see the $14,000 difference between your two cars and report back to us!!

>What kind of HP and torque does a chipped S4 pull?

for an example, check out:
http://www.goapr.com

"The APR 1.0 Bar performance chip is good for 307 horsepower and 366 ft. lbs. of torque."

And that's no joke - they have a dyno to prove it and are very well regarded (same for the A6 2.7T for that matter , same engine, similar weight) . Perfect example of why torque is so important!! However, if you must know, your TL-S will probably barely beat a non-chipped S4, sedan or wagon, IF it's a Tiptronic and not manual. However, any Audi quattro can out-handle our Acuras anyday.

I was originally going to buy an S4, possibly even an S4 Avant, because the regular one was too small, especially the back seat (I DO have stuff and people to tote around occasionally).

I decided on the TL-S because of it's features and price, while being at least as fast as a Tiptronic S4, even more so for the wagon. I'm a lazy driver, and I hate driving stick in traffic and such, (lots of that in Orlando) plus I have my motorcycle for all that go fast, crazy shifting stuff ) Plus to cost would have been around 9k-12k more, depending on if I got the S4 Avant or the A6 2.7t.

But in all honesty, i wholly and humbly admit that I consider both Audi's, and Audi in general, to be vastly superior to Acura, especially since my precious TL-S was built in America (read: TONs of build quality errors, I'd love to list them, NOT ) But in the end, I'm not that egotistical, as I hope most people aren't, and the TL-S is just too sweet a deal for the price, and no Audi owner out there would even argue that point. Plus, I'm thinking about trading in my bike and getting that beautiful new Honda VTX

Happy motoring!

It is a question of torque, which he has tons of low down due to the compressed intake charge.

However, on a hot, muggy day, his edge will be down.

The car mags often test turbos it San Francisco area, where the cool air really helps the turbs make power.

Cool

Stock to Stock, S4 Auto and TLS should be about dead even, with S4 slightly edged out TLS at take-off as S4 has more torque and AWD.

Stick S4 would dust a TLS, though it would depend on how good the driver is with the 6-speed tranny.

Chipped S4, stick or auto, will leave TLS as if it's stand still. If your friend's S4 is chipped(even if its only mod is the chip), don't even think about racing with him.. Let him have fun dusting M3s and running with CLK55 AMG...

I would not race for money! Granted, I don't own a Type S, but i've heard the S4 is very quick. I wouldn't race him with a stock TLS. Get modded out, then go and meet him again.
I wouldn't expect to beat a Type S with my car now, so why would you think you can beat him? Unless he sucks at driving which i doubt if he bought an S4. Thats more of an enthusiasts type of car.

Cool

You can try put on header/chip/exhaust on TL-S, but a S4 with chip mod alone will still eat you alive.... don't even try...

Chipped S4s can gain as any where from 50 - 100HP, and about the same for torque.....with a bigger intercooler and exhaust(StageII), another 50HP/30-50lb-ft torque....

With Stage III, S4 6-speed can run with M5s/E55s/M3s all day long and MIGHT even dust them...

It's not torque, it's VERY LOW GEARING that the Audi uses, combined with traction. It doesn't have the engine to compete, but it's a smaller car, with AWD and very low gearing. His engine turns 2500 RPM at 60MPH vs. the TL-S turning 1750 RPM @ 60MPH. If he has the tiptronic it would be too close to call. If he has the manual, he'll be able to take you.

Of course if you added Nitrous Oxide into the mix... ;-)

Just from an S4 owners perspective...

A chipped + Exhaust S4 is a whole nother beast. With a chip + exhaust an S4 is at about 330hp / 380 - 390 lb/ft of torque. A buddy of mine who drag races his S4 almost every weekend is in the 13.1s @ 105 - 106mph with just a Chip and Exhaust...

I do have to say that the torque really makes this car..I can pull away from a lot of cars at 70 in 6th gear without having to downshift. Just nail it and go.

Now, I really like the Acura TL (My roommate Foo is looking at getting a Type-S) but, don't mess with the S4. Its simply out of your league

in my 1990 Eagle talon tsi awd
awd & turbo kicks but!

But can an S4 pack 4 passengers (+driver) for a nice long 5 hr. trip like a tl can????

I didn't think so.

Hey Z... i agree with all of that but the "league" part... lets see you take FOUR adults to lunch without pretzeling someone.
headers, exhaust and gas would at least make it interesting...

ZerinS4,

You mentioned "banana", so I assume you have Imola Yellow S4, no??

Anyways, S4 was one my list when I was doing the shopping(that's before Type S came out, of course)...performance-wise, you are right, chip + exhaust S4 is out of TL-S league.....but S4 has small interior, that's a fact!!!

BTW, does Audi finally fixed the gear box problem?? One of my friend just got this tranny taken out again.... synchro screw up again...

Hey zerinS4, nice pics of your car. But I've got to tell ya', it sure looked small in there when you took that picture of the dash area from the back seat. I hope you and your passenger are broad shouldered types!!! Cause if you are, you'd better buy a TL!!

I'm 5'8 and 130lbs, and most of my passengers are female so even with a big build guy up front there is still enough room for small frame passengers.

This topic is going no where....

Anyways, one last note....

Stock TL-S, stick or auto, will get dust by a stock S4 Manual with above-average skilled driver. S4 Tip would be close match with TL-S auto...

Chipped S4s?? Don't bother racing them....

Heh, "going nowhere". I couldn't agree more, Andy. Thing is, topics like this generate so much attention on any forum for any make/model/year/color/smell, because......

*drum roll*

- There will always be topics like this, as long as there are people who seem to attach their egos or sense of self-worth to their cars/0-60 times/volume of their stereo/size of their girlfriend's @$#@/length of their own @#$#, well you get the idea. -

Here's to wishing that everyone enjoys the car they choose to buy, whatever their budget, and to wishing that everyone who makes a futile attempt to convince everyone else that their own car is better than anyone else's - just shuts the hell up

Cheers! *clink*

both cars perform about the same!! I've driven the S4 quite a bit and the TLS somehow feels faster (because it is :-). Handling in the Audi is slightly better, probably due to its smaller profile.

Sure, race him!! But don't ask him to push his Audi too much, reliability is not like Acura and he may have to change all his engine components when the race is over :-)

You do not have your figures right, or are comparing the stick with the auto..not a fair comparision....and BTW, nobody in a big city drives a stick unless they want to abuse themselves in stop-and-go traffic !!

The S4 Tiptronic does 0-60 in 6.5 seconds..the TLS does it in 6.3

Do you all realize that in a 5 - 1/4 mile shootout b/w the TL-S and the S4 manual -- the difference would only be about 1.5 to 2 car lengths? .. As far as I'm concerned .. BIG DEAL!! Hey, I'll give up 1.5 car lengths for $15K in my pocket and the ultra-smooth 5-spd auto in the TLS anyday -- hell, I did in March when i bought the tls!!!
