180 Watt Alpine Deck if HU = Head Unit
4.1 speaker system (4 mids plus 1 sub)

You get what you pay for.

Yes HU=Head Unit. Isn't it Boss though?

Another question: What ohm does the HU produce? 2 or 4 ohm? Will Head Unit support aftermarket 4ohm speakers?

Thx

The HU doesn't produce any ohms - resistance is a function of the load (the speakers in this case).

Are you asking what the minimum load that can be driven is? A 1 ohm load would require healthy current output capabilty in the HU, and I doubt it could dissipate that much heat into 4 speakers for very long. My guess is to keep aftermarket speakers at around 4 ohms - remember, impedance varies over frequency, and if it drops to its low point in the bass, it can overheat an amp.

The factory setup allows for that - with aftermarket you never know. You might want to add an amp with the current capability needed to dsrive the speakers you are considering.

Look for a total system solution and ensure the components interact electrically in a positive way.

If the 2002 TL-S Bose is anything like the Bose in the 4th generation Maximas (95-99), then it indeed requires 1 ohm speakers at the corners. This was one of the biggest complaints by the Maxima owners. If you got the base head unit (made by Clarion), you could replace the speakers with 4-8ohm aftermarkets (like I did in my '97). If you ordered the $899 Bose upgrade, you still got the Clarion head unit, but all that $$$ got you was four parametrically EQ'd amps, one at each corner driving a 1-ohm speaker. Oh, and a Bose logo on the cassette cover. With no line outs on the head unit, owners were screwed when it came to upgrading.

I've read elsewhere on this board that there are line-outs on the stock head unit, and although I can't say for certain what the load is, it is quite possible that the amp can/does/requires 1 ohm speakers.

I just happened to have been at EarMark yesterday and inquired about upgrading my system.

They said that the HU in the TL has custom outputs and can only be used with the matched speakers it came with. Basically saying that I need to put in a new amp and new speakers if I wanted to change anything.

Since I'm not an audio speciallist I have no idea if this is true or not. So does any really understand this?

Hey all,

The headunit makes 80 Watts...20 watts each to the four speakers. The rear "subwoofer" has its own amplifier...100 W x 1.

Thanks.

Ask Streeteffectz, but my understanding is that you can't add aftermarket stuff to the system aside from a speaker level amp feeding a stand-alone sub. Bummer.
