Another Evap Canister Purge Control Valve Question
I noticed my evap canister purge control valve (the one located on the firewall on the drivers side) is clicking/ticking once the engine is warmed up. I can actually hear and feel it cycling and the frequency is pretty fast – say 5 or so ticks per second. At first I thought it was a fuel injector until I traced down the source of the noise. Is this normal? The Acura shop manual says this valve is to open whenever coolant temp is above 147 degrees F. It doesn’t say anything about it cycling on and off so many times per second. This was an incidental finding during some recent work I performed on the car with no particular problems associated with the ticking sound. Just curious and want to know if I should invest in the $50 to replace this part.

Not sure if it needs to be replaced or not. Could be normal. Am soliciting others to check their valve and report back if it ticks or not. Based on my review of the shop manual, it seems the valve should just be on or off, not rapidly cycling.

It should cause a ticking noise when activated. Not 100% on that but Toyota's do tick so they can regulate vacuum to the evap system.
THIS IS NORMAL.
You do NOT want full 20inhg of vacuum on your evap system.
Think of the evap purge control solenoid as the ABS for your evap sys.
To regulate wheel slip the ABS module pulses the brakes.
To regulate vacuum on the evap it pulses it.
And to answer the other question about the manual. If I'm not mistaken it asks you to test the solenoid with air or vacuum while you apply power or remove power to the solenoid. Correct?
If yes it is working properly. (The ECM pulses the solenoid, which is why you can't get it to do it by applying power).
Does this help?

It is completely normal for them to tick on the tl. You can replace it if it bothers you but it wont hurt to have it tick. Mine has been doing it for over 450 k miles

Thanks for the replies. Makes sense now. Had read other threads about this valve being extraordinarly noisy which is why I even questioned it in the first place.
