Amazing Change!

i'v been hatin my 01 TL's fuel economy problem. Averaging about 250 - 260 a tank in Los Angeles. Just 3 days ago, i decided to give it a oil change w/ Mobile1 n Mobile 1 oil filter; Chevron Fuel Injector Cleaner; and balanced my air pressure to 36 PSI. I went from L.A. to Las Vegas with only 3/5 tank of gas w/ AC fully functioning. That tank of gas gave me 300 miles on LA to Vegas freeway miles AND 80 more on vegas Local. HAPPY HAPPY!! And on my way back, filled it up at "mobil" and gave me 400 miles freeway and LED still haven't come on yet! HaPPY haPPY happY!

By the way, i also went to Vegas 2 months ago w/ my old oil, i barely made it w/ a tank! u ROCK "MOBILE1"

I was just about to start a thread on this. I got exactly 425 (Gas lamp-on) on one full tank complete freeways with my trip to SF last weekend.

Crap - I've been wondering about this.

I only get about 300 max on my '02 Type-S.

I did a complete 35,000 mile overhaul at the dealer (a thousand bucks!?!?!), and I still get the same results. So what do I do to fix this? Is it really that much of a difference with the Mobil filter?

Holy waste of money, batman. No car needs $1000 worth of work at 35,000 miles. You don't need that much work at 135,000 on most cars.

I bet your dealer loves you.

Wow, I am suprised to hear that just using different oil and and filter would increase your gas mileage so much. I have always used K&N oil fliters but if this can actually increase mileage that much then I think I will give it a shot the next time I change my oil.

Ditto! Can you say RIP-OFF? Try learning to so some maintenance yourself! I can;t believe they did this. As for teh extended drain oils, I'm willing to bet they're no different than the regular versions.

I'm at 285 with 1/4 tank left. This is not a good tank for my car. Last tank was 357, 87 octane. This tank is 93 octane. I'm starting to feel like I get better mileage with 87.

are you sure you're doing the same driving route/style? i did a trrip to six flags and i got just about 220 mi for the first half - that's all highway.. filled it up , then i did some city/highway and got only 130 mi for the first half.... bigg difference..

Yeah, I am driving the same. I always do. I drive from my Atlanta Suburb to Atlanta once a week, and around in town the rest. I've gotten 403 miles doing that out of 87 octane.

Perhaps it isn't so bad? It was at 1/2 tank at 200 for this tank, and is at 1/4 tank at (now) 300 miles. I was driving earlier and realized this tank's probably going to yield 400 or close, because I do 50 miles past the gas light every time (and it will never hold more than 15 gallons).

actually, I'm not too certain that motor oil will increase your milage, but I now know that on NON stop freeways, our TLPs can go all the way up to 425 miles.

I took a trip last summer and for one tank i experaminted by driving 70-75 mph, for one tank. I averaged just over 29 mpg!! I was impressed. I recently cleaned the Throttle Body and intake manifold. That made it even better. There is a great DIY here on the cleaning.

Fresh oil can affect your gas mileage. The new filter has probably less to do with the increase in your gas mileage. If you think of your oil viscosity new and after several thousand miles. There is a decent difference. The old oil flows less efficiently and creates more friction than new oil. I notice a difference in performance around 6000miles on Mobil1 but I don't change it till 7500.

How many RPM's does your tranny shift at? If it is shifting at 3200-3800RPM you have a moderately heavy foot. If your shifts are below 3000RPMS and you don't gas it on the on-ramps you should be getting better gas mileage than that. I think there could be something wrong if you are easy on the throttle.

I'm willing to bet its more dependent upon your driving style and road conditions than the new oil and filter.

I've got over 400 out of a tank driving from RI to NY and back.
Since putting in my K&N Air filter, the most I get is about 375 out of a tank.

Does the fuel injector cleaner really helps? I heard that once you use them, you have to keep using them. Also, is the optimal psi for our tires 36? I always had them around 40. Maybe thats why i can feel a lot of cracks on the road..=)

Not so on the fuel injector cleaner....use it whenever you like. But I have heard "stories" about some of it affecting the oxygen sensors. Dont know if its true or not.

40 PSI??? Thats pretty high actually. Depends on the tire manufacturer and what typ of tires you have. I have 225/40/18's and I run 34 PSI in them. At 40 PSI, Im surprised your car isnt "wandering" all over the road.... Would wear out the tires in the middle of the treak more also. I occasionally run mine at 36 if I have a long road trip

Liftedoff420: Clean the TB and EGR valve. Both would effect performance and gas mileage. I think if your EGR valve is clogged the ECU would run your car rich and burn more gas. Do a search on the DIY for the EGR valve.

Other ideas would be buying Techron Concentrate for a tank, tire PSI at 34-35, air filter replaced every 30k

All tires are different. Your sidewall usually shows recommended pressure and max pressure. I would bet it recommends 32 with a max of around 40. I usually run 2 psi over recommended. Higher pressure gives better mileage but too high affects tire wear and adversely affects handling.

You TL is freakin sick! I had 4 guys in my car on my trip to vegas and packed my truck w/ lugages. Kept my RPM under 3000. Except when runnin up those high hills, put my gear on 3 around 4500 RPM, smoking everyone w/ about 80 miles per hr! hahah...it's nice watchin those i-4s slowing down n we draggin up..
