that is the word, simply because you engine has less mass that it has to rotate so it does this easier and this lets some more HP come out, people have said the car revs faster also.

It frees up power from the parasidic loss from the heavy OEM crank pulley. Same thing goes with wheels, the lighter the wheel, the more hp is freed up, not added.

From what I recall, the pulleys are good for about 10-15hp down low ... Not many other mods are going to give you extra hp in the lower rpm range. Most bolt on mods like headers/intake are only good for extra horsepower up high. So the pulleys are definitely a welcome add-on. I'm thinking about getting them put in this summer.

Difference:
1 - There is no power gains from the AC and alternator pulleys
2 - AEM doesn't make a crank pulley
3 - AEM underdrives alt and PS, UR does not
4 - UR pulleys are the same size as stock, just lighter (parasidic drag)

As far as I can understand at this point (NSXNEXT, please chime in if I'm wrong, because I'm still just learning about pulleys) that AEM uses smaller size pulleys, whereas UR uses same size pulleys as OEM, but is lighter. Therefore, you absolutely need new belts with AEM, but you can use OEM belts with UR. But UR recommends using Gator belts, I guess.

I have the three piece UR pulley set on my car. Let's see if I can answer some questions.
1. The P/S and alternator pulleys are just lighter. The crank pulley is both lighter and smaller in diameter/underdrive (by 15%). Most of your gains are from the crank pulley, but the three piece set just looks so good!
2. Yes - you need new belts if you get the crankshaft pulley. You cannot get away with using your OEM belts because they will be too long. UR recomments Gates belts (which I have) and give the part numbers in the instructions that come with the pulleys.
3. Is it hard to install? Yes. You have to remove an engine mount to get the P/S belt on and the crankshaft pulley has a torque of about 180 ft-lbs. I don't know how many shadetree mechanics have a torque wrench that goes that high. In addition to that, if you have an auto tranny there's a special procedure that has to be used for getting the pulley on or off without spinning the engine (manual is easier because you can lock up the engine by putting the car in gear). It took my mechanic about 2 hours. He actually said the hardest part was removing the alternator (go figure).

Pulleys are going to be my first Mod.UR is the way to go. I spoke to them a couple of weeks ago, and I'm going for it.
They refered me to, believe it or not, a Manchester Honda (Honda dealer in Manchester CT. www.manhonda.com ) They sell the UR 3 piece set (SS Pulley) for $299. The service dept will do the install and provide the new belts 3 hours @ $76 per hr.
UR claims we should get ~18 more ponies out of the mod. That's about $30 per pony, not to mention it looks phenomenal in the engine compartment.
I'll let you know what it feels like in a couple of weeks.

Hi, I have a 99tl but I also have a pretty large system in the trunk. Do I need the Sc pulleys or can I just get the S ones? If I need the Sc's, where can I get them, I can't find a good price on them anywhere. Thanks in advance!!!

Just get them direct from the companies website. There they are between 200 & 300 bucks. The dynos for the CL are on on the site too and they are impressive gains (13hp/9ftlbs torque!). Anyone know of a DIY for this mod?

Yeah OU sig get the sc just so you know that gains will not be as good as the s because the sc does not underdrive but it should not be a big differnce since most of the gains are from the weight loss. I will be getting the s soon and since I live in ny I will be having UR do the install for me.

UR does not provide you with a belt; you have to buy those separately. If you don't get the underdrive pulley you should be fine to use your old belts.
However, if you have 50k+ miles on your belts you should probably replace them anyways.

You guys know anything about the harmonic balancer that Honda designs on their own crank pulleys? This is where you really should stick with GINUINE HONDA PARTS. Racers use aftermarket crank pulleys because they give extra horsepower. The thing is...racers also have the opportunity to rebuild engines between races. On a street driven engine, the absence of the harmonic balancer (which is built into the crank pulley) WILL, over time, cause premature wear on an engine, especially in a high revving engine.
This was enough of a deterrent for me...it may be something to think about.
