For All u professional drivers.
heres the major question.
i know that the TL has SS and i was wondering, u know how u can go all the way down 2 D1, is it ok 2 drive the car that way? and then shift up. i am wondering if it is ok? i like manual better, cuz there is more moving of the hand. so i wanna try this.

I used to have a V6 auto Grand Am, and I used the D1-D4 to upshift and downshift all the time - until the tranny blew at 61K.

I have seen someone driven his Civic w/ auto transmission before since everytime he shifted to a higher gear, the engine will rev up for a short while before catching the next gear.
Is it ok to drive that way ? I don't see any issues since if you downshift too quickly on a manual transmission, it will also blow the tranny as well.
Just my $0.02

its fine to use it that way if your are accelerating, if you are decelerating make sure you blip the throtle a little to reve match so its not as hard on the tranny going to the lower gear

I don't know the technical side of everything, but fsttyms1 is stating what I've always heard:
Downshifting is where the stress comes on the transmission. If you have your foot on the throttle at the time of the downshift, the stress is greatly reduced...That's why you really shouldn't use the downshift rather than the brake pedal unless as you brake you are downshifting to get right back on the throttle as in a corner...
That being said, I just don't use the "gate shift" rather than s/s unless I know I'm gonna run someone from a stop and I feel I really need the extra rpm's to have a chance...

That holds true for autos or manuals. Use the brakes to slow your car down, not your transmission.

As far as I know you can drive the TL 3 different ways.
-Full auto (leave it at D5 like most wives do).
-Manual (shifting 1-5 using the gate)
-Sport-Shift (a-la rally/ GT cars doing up/down on the stick).
Drive it and have fun, just don't drive it to the ground.

What's wrong with gate shifting? Nothing mechanical as long as you don't do dumb things like downshift from D4 straight to D2 with the fast pedal down. The rev limiter would protect your engine, but I doubt the transmission is built to take that kind of sudden energy impact.
But gate shifting is less precise -- you have to pay attention to where the lever is going, and you'll miss a gear every once in a while.
The SS mode lets you move up and down gears with even less attention to your right hand than a manual tranny does.
I still don't quite understand why you want to use the straightline gate path rather than SS.

Your just asking asking for tranny problems.... Just use SS and forget about gate shifting... It does the same things as gate shifting just less stress on the tranny. If they wanted people to gate shift they would of never put in the SS....

ASSEMBLED TO PERFECTION
ok hope this helps i jus got my tl recently i had a 95 accord b4 with nitrous and it was auto, i shifted manually and ****ttt load of times, when racing, jus driving fast, using nitrous watever it was, my tranny never gave me probs, and if u went from d4 to d1 it doesnt matter its not gonna down shift to 1st gear if ur going to be redlineing, the tranny will only shift into the lowest gear that wont be red lineing when u down shift to it

Dude, just use the SS. the only thing you can't do w/ the SS is shift right at the redline while in 1st. it does it automatically to prevent someone from screwing up the tranny. i perfer the SS over driving in automatic just because you can down shift in turns so that you can come out faster (like going in and coming out in 3rd or 4th as opposed to comin out in 2nd or 3rd. and i agree w/ every one else. no one is perfect at gate shifting, so use the SS and avoid any possible problems
