Airbag recall expanded - May 2011

Honda Motor Co., Japan’s third-largest automaker, said it will again expand a U.S. recall of Honda and Acura brand models to fix flawed air-bag components.
The company will inspect model year 2001 to 2003 vehicles that may have had the original driver’s air-bag module replaced with a flawed service part, Honda said today in an e-mailed statement. As a result, the recall now includes an additional 833,000 vehicles, the Tokyo-based company said.
Honda “determined that a number of affected service part air bags were installed in these vehicles in the process of a collision repair or other vehicle service,” according to the statement. “Owners of all potentially affected vehicles are being notified because Honda has not been able to determine which specific vehicles received one of those parts.”
The faulty air-bag inflators are at risk of deploying too forcefully and causing the inflator’s casing to rupture, potentially leading to injuries or fatalities for vehicle occupants, the company said. Customer notification is to begin late this month.
Vehicles covered by the action include some 2001 and 2002 Accord and Civic cars; 2002 Odyssey minivans; 2002 and 2003 CR-V sport-utility vehicles; and some 2002 and 2003 Acura 3.2 TL sedans and 2003 Acura 3.2 CL coupes, the company said.
Honda last year recalled 437,763 Honda and Acura models to inspect for faulty air-bag modules at risk of deploying too forcefully. The company has said air-bag systems were supplied by Japan’s Takata Corp. (7312)
Honda’s U.S. unit is based in Torrance, California.

According to this article came out today and it said that the ones that were replaced were defective and they added some cars to the list that they originally thought were ok...

its an extension of the covered vins--
same as every car maker does with recalls --start small and be forced to expand the range until all affected units are found
better ck your vins people!!
PLUS
if you already went in for this recall- go back in- they used a defective part!!!

freebies are great!!
its the inflator deployment speed that gets fixed,,seems to be a bit fast and may implode your chest (just a guess-legal disclaimer!)
its easier to get loaner cars tues wed thur, and ask in advance to get on the list.
only so many cars and everybody wants one

I seem to recall the original recall being due to the potential of shrapnel as well. I was glad to get that fixed, as I can't imagine it's safe to have shrapnel coming out of the steering column.

^ the topic was discussed a long long time ago, back when the original airbag recall surfaced, and i remember reading that they use your original cover. it is just one piece of the assembly that they service. no need to change the entire airbag/cover/etc.

ACURA takes care of acura recalls- even though honda owns both --its a record keeping thing or bookkeeping bs
try living in Hawaii!!! 7 main islands, 1 acura dealer
recall is still valid if thats your question

they are not touching your airbags--just the inflator mechanism
which IF you just got new bags after a crash--may have the updated part already
ask service or parts manager to run your vin and see whats up

if the dealer swapped out your bags for bad ones and you crash--the bags will be inspected,,traced back and the dealer will lose their business

Good time to have them do the water pump and timing belt ( if getting close to replacement ). I had them do those when i had my belt tensioner replaced and the bill was only like $ 385 vs $1100..

cars with tensioner recall need to read the fine print of the recall- you can get a lot more parts replaced under it--that dealers will charge for if you let them
thats what I read here on azine
ck the full recall info carefully-
dont expect a service writer- who gets paid by commision and really prefers customer paid jobs over recall ones they dont make anything on!
to be working in your best interest

Called this morning, mines not in the airbag recall group, only for the pass. srs seat extended warranty.
Asked why my a-spec has grey leather instead of blue. Car was made when grey was the leather colour available at the factory and was aimed at a certain demographic. Interesting response.
