AEM cai

Hello,

I recently bought a 2002 TL type S, it has eibach springs and an AEM cai. I drove it home from work in a heavy rain storm and the throttle started surging (between 500 to 3500rpm). Now that it stopped raining and the car has dried out it runs fine. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem with a lowered car and a cai, and is it possible to cut a couple inches off the cai to raise it up off the ground a little?

Thanks
Jim

I have the same springs and CAI on my TL never had a problem. You can buy a water proof sock from AEM to cover the air filter, that should help it from getting soaked. The way the AEM is bent cutting the pipe short will not raise the filter any higher from the ground.

Where do you live???? The only way water is going to affect your car with the CAI is if it literally submerged into water. One of our members even has a video of his car driving through water, which he might post here.

Unless you dont have a fender liner or lower splash shield heavy rain isnt going to do anything to it. You would have to be driving through 10" of water for it to effect it. Sounds like moisture got to a connection or something.

As the car goes through the water it splashes so much that it reaches about 10ft or so and is maintained... You don't think it would hit his CAI if he had no fender liner?

Point is, as long as the fender liner is there and isn't dunked into water it is completely safe. The intake is like a straw, unless your straw is fully submerged into the liquid you will suck nothing but air.

If you do get hydrolocked, let's just say your car won't just "have problems"

The water was 8" deep at its deepest, and is part of my point. Driving thru puddles and heavy rain should NOT hydrolock the motor. Now IF you dont have a splash shield/fender liner on it will not help.

As stated, there is only an issue if the filter is submerged.

Think of it like a straw. Ever try drinking rain water from the air with straw? Try it, take a video, post here, let us laugh.
Straws only really suck in water when the tip is submerged completely. Same for your intake.

If you are worried though, they make breathable socks as mentioned as well as bypass valves that redirect air flow when the filter is submerged.
