Arrow advice on tranny flush if havent had one ever @ 170k + miles?

1999 TL with 170,000 miles +

mightve never had a tranny flush bought it with about 44k so 126,000 miles with no tranny flush at all.

the car knocks when it shifts at times, wondering if doing a tranny flush at this stage would be a negative

So I was thinking about at least using lucas tranny fix

I need you guys advice here so much appreciated in advance

Yea, I'm pretty sure you would be better off NOT changing the fluid.

I would love if Tom or someone knowledgeable could explain to me why changing the fluid after a long time is bad.

It has to do with the sludge build-up from the old fluid. New fluid is more viscous. But, you never know what'll happen until you try it.

However, if it were me, I'd feel compelled to change out the fluid and do a 3x3.

most of the concern over `flush` or 3x3 drain and fill on old crudded fluid is from the amount of cleaners in new fluid
If the crud is whats holding the last of the cluch material to the disc,,,
and it gets washed away,,, then major slippage occurs

there may be a plain type F with little cleaner that will keep it going a while longer,,as being reported by several members on generic type F,, or redline atf

you have to look hard for a new car without tiptronic-sport shift auto trans of some type
Paddle shifter on steering wheel is the norm nowadays!

so if you do the 3x3 and it creates a chance that it could make your tranny slip then its not worth it, especially if it didnt even fix the knock.

So instead of trannyflush thats why I was thinking about lucas

But what are all the options, again car knocks shifting into lower gears and occasionally takes a little longer to shift 3rd possibly with the age and miles on the car wit no tranny flush in a long time if ever what would you do????????????

`flush` is a bad word here- no machine powered type service should be done

gravity drain and refill with 3 qts,,3.4 if you are patient with the draining
use a plain type F trans fluid,,or redline lightweight racing atf
not the honda stuff we normally would use

it has less `slippery` additives in it and may help,,if it does then do another 3 qts,,,see how it drives
It its got a serious problem,,nothing will make it go away
lucas is about the last thing you would use--its thick-excess line pressure causes shifting problems

If--this is general TL trans info- If its hard to get in reverse in the morning,
let the engine warm up 2 minutes--less rpm then will help ease the trans into R
when you have higher rpm,,pushing gas--that increases the pressure

see threads on different atf by I hate cars,,some in gen2 others in gen3

most important before you dive into this:
How does the fluid look and smell on the dipstick?

are you getting actual slippage--rpm increase as it tries for 3rd?

what does `knocks shifting into gear` mean??--please describe,,I have heard of thunking and slamming...
sometimes its broken motor/trans mount causing those,,but the 3rd slipping is different issue

side question: did the timing belt service around 105kmiles?
ever adjusted the valves? does the engine tick a lot?
low on power or recent fuel economy change?

thinking actual engine noises that may occur at shift points, if that were combined with broken vac boosted motor mount???
and maybe even old spark plugs
how many miles on them?

In 2006 I had Acura change out my fluid (3rd tranny) that had been in there about 80,000 miles. I drove about 160 miles and it blew up.

You can read about my 3rd tranny info in my thread:
https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-tl-1999-2003-98/3rd-tranny-blown-dealing-dealer-599936/

In post #14 I talk about getting the tranny fluid changed.

see if its a warranty trans--
open hood and look at the bolts that go thru the trans and some that hold small pieces to the outside of trans
Is there blue paint on those bolt heads? thats an acura replacement trans--usually warranty
so that will cut the actual miles on it--a good thing!!

I would do 1 time 3 qt drain and refill at this age
3 qts shoud be ok if the trans is fine inside

If its already making noise and slipping- slamming into gear,,no fluid is going to help it!
a few things might prolong its life
If your fluid is currently black or smells like burnt sugar = already toast
Lucas is not going not cure anything
