Post advantage of 4-speed vs 5-speed

I was wondering why did acura go with the 5-speed in 2000. What advantage does this give over the 4-speeds in 1999. Does it have more top end? quicker? smoother?

All of the above... I think its funner to play with five gears instead of four... But then again, they can shift to first when they want and we cant ... I believe someone said that they raced a 99 with a 00 and the 2000 won... I really dont know if itz faster ...

Thumbs up

yes the 00+ is exactly a half a second (.5) faster then the 99, it has been tested, and I have a 00 in which I raced a 99 and pulled around 3-4 car lengths, good shi* huh?

Is it quicker becuase the gear ratios are closer together? and the added 5th gear makes up for the loss of top speed during the change to closer ratios?

Gears 1~3 are packed pretty tightly. Vtec engagement is at 4500RPM. From 1>2>3 the RPM never drops below 4500, that's one huge factor for the speed of the 2000 TLs. You're always in the power zone. And by the time you top out in 3rd gear, you're going about 105+ already. After the install of my hi-flo cat. Althought the shift from 3>4 the RPMs drop to 4100RPM, there's only about a 5 sec lag before the VTEC kicks in again.

An automobile engine such as it is is more efficient in some parts of it's rpm range than other parts. This is normal and all auto engines are like this.If you have a greater selection of gears to choose from you will be able to operate the engine more efficiently. As an added plus the addition of more gears also sometimes allows for more performance as was the case when Acura went from the four speed to the five speed.Jens

I have a '99 also. My problem is only on the hiway w/ cruise on. When you slow down for traffic then "resume" when traffic clears the cruise it will kick down into 3rd if there's any grade at all. You take of like a shot but most times it's just not necessary! I get around it by accelerating back close to cruise speed before hitting resume or pulling the sportshift over.
Wish I had a 5-speed with the closer gears tho.

I believe 14.9 has quite a few mods on his Tl vs. a stock 99 TL, that was probably the case, correct me if I'm wrong.

Nope. 14.9 only has a short ram intake if I remember correctly. He just iced his intake tube and ran a 14.9.

14.9 is funny. He has one mod - short ram intake and pulled a 14.9 one time according to his story. its not even consistent. and he starts posting topics like who has the fastest car, and even his name is his 1/4 mile time. i haven't seen other users, with much faster cars do that...
oh well to each his/her own.
just my 2 cents

Another advantage to the 5spd is that it's vastly superior to the 4spd in terms of shift quality. This has nothing to do with there being one more gear, but Acura obviously got something right when they made this new transmission. That old 4spd was awful. Shifts about as smoothly as a 5spd manual in a drag race.

And the 5th gear allows for lower RPM's which lets them post a tad higher economy. All in the #'s.. but the closers lower gears is more fun.

My Acura dealer told me one of the reason for the new transmission is to get rid of the "shift shock" which many 99 Tl owner was complaining about. The smoothness of the shift of the 00 is alot better.

The 99 TL transmission was basically a rush job by Acura. In their hurry to get the car to the market (before its transmission was ready), they patched on an available 4-speed transmission, and got the car to the market. A year later, the original transmission intended for the 3.2TL (5-speed), was ready, and the 2000 model year on, had it. Who were the losers ? The people who paid MSRP for the 99 TL.... shame on Acura for changing something vital like the vehicle's transmission, a year into the car's model iteration....
