Additional Trans Cooler

With all the hub-bub about transmission failures I have been giving serious thought to an auxiliary transmission fluid cooler. I don't have the car yet (buying a new 03' Type-S in June) but just having the extra protection is looking very appealing. Heck, for every 20 deg. reduction in fluid temp you could double the life of the transmission (researched fact).

I did a Google search and came up with what looks like a dealer that posts prices for extra services on Acura cars. One of them was a trans-cooler for $149+labor. I can put it in myself but I would like to get a part number for this thing. Or even any suggestions of better manufacturers of such an animal dedicated to fit this car. TCI? etc...

If I'm not mistaken, there's coolant fluids running through the transmisson already.

I added an auxillery cooler to my tranny and have been very pleased with it. The additional cooling definitely keeps the fluid from breaking down. My shifts have remained consistent ever since I installed. Shifts are just as snappy after a hard run Previously, shifts would get get sloppier after a hard run when fluid was hot.

Comptech makes one for our cars that runs around $150.

I used a B&M 70264 (24,000 GVW) and fabricated my own brackets patterned after the Comptech kit. I'm pretty sure that they use B&M 70255 (16,000 GVW)

If you do it soon after you purchase your car, you won't need to flush your system. I highly recommend it. Don't know if it will help prevent issues with the ongoing tranny failure problems but it's definitely worth doing for drivability and preventative maintence.
