AC temp control by thermo or heat?

When the auto AC is adjusting for temp on my 02 TL-S, does it use a thermostat to cut the compressor on and off, or does it just add heat to the ac mix (therefore not saving mpg)?

Thanks for the reply...that's great to hear. Couldn't find it in the manual. My old Lexus just added heat...pretty cheesy if you ask me. And I thought I heard the compressor kicking on and off.

if its on full auto and the car does require heat (like winter time then it will adjust the thermostat to allow more heat) but in summer it will cycle it on or off
