Aamco Mercury Insurance Group Tranny

I've been searching all over the internet and I cannot find anyone that has experience with ACURA transmission and AAMCO.

I just purchased my 2003 TL type-S the first weeks of august because I needed a better car to commute to school. My transmission failed as i was going up there towards the end of august. I called ACURA and they said they woudlnt do anything because it was a "junkyard transmissoin" and it wasn't their original transmissoin (I wouldn't have known), i wasn't the original owner, and it was out of warranty. I called, I argued, I didn't win with ACURA. however my dad got a third party insurnace company, Mercury Insurance Group, a week or two after we purchased our car. THe deal wiht them was we couldnt claim anything for 30days and 1,000 miles and they'll handle most mechanical issues after that. So my question to you is, does anyone have any experience wiht AAMCO b/c when i was talking to the service rep he was like, ACURA transmissions have many problems, but AAMCO has updates to recorrect those TRANNY issues, etc.. and secondly does anyone hav any experience wiht MERCURY INSURANCE GROUP?

Thanks any reply posts would be appreciated.

aamco can do a quality job and has good warranty- make sure to ask how many they have done at THAT shop
Sounds like acura pulled the ol ~out of vin~ on the last owner so they went junkyard

The main differance with the acura replacements is it has a new case with improved oil passages- not really fixed but better for sure!
Aamco can buy all the same internal parts and they are all the update parts
should run about $2500 with new clutch packs and more

Tough it out a month and call it in- should be no biggie- just read all the fine print before you call- you are not the first with a TL trans failure
The ones from acura are 4 g's

Hello! I came across your post as I have google set to notify me of AAMCO posts, since I own 2 of them in Dallas. Anyways, I checked our list of fleet accounts and there is a company called American Mercury Insurance Company/AFI management Company Inc. Not sure if this is the same one or not. Feel free to call me at the shop tomorrow and I can look into it more for you. Also, let me know where you live and there is a fair chance I will know one of the owners in that market as I used to work for corporate and can refer you to them.

Best regards,
Dave

Hi Dave,

I was searching this forum just a couple days ago for Aamco references as I am about to take my 99 TL in to have the transmission looked at. I bought an aftermarket warranty through Warranty Direct and hoping to have most of it covered under warranty (i'm assuming it will need to be replaced/rebuilt).

Do you have any experience with TL transmissions or Warranty Direct? In the warranty's literature they listed Aamco as a suggested place to go. Also, where are your stores located?

Thanks in advance!
Kirk

I own 2 stores in the Dallas, TX market. One thing I would check on. There was a huge recall on transmissions for TL's and Accord's in 2004 I think it was. Check with the dealership to see if your transmission is possibly covered still (No guarantee on that, but worth checking.). Let me know what are you live in and I can refer you to an AAMCO in that market.

i also spoke to the dealership they said that most third party insurances dont cover a new transmission.. they usually prefer for the transmission to be rebuilt...hence aamco, b/c its nationally recognized.. dave at your stores, have you delt with 2003 acura TL type-s tranny, and were you able to fix the problem? and if so did the person ever come back complaining that the transmission wasn't working properly? and how much did you usually charge the individual?

dave- there was a "recall" for installation of an external oil spray bar for 2nd gear packs, not the entire transmission- some were replaced if borscope inspection show burned 2nd gear

The "extended warranty 7 years/109k miles" made by the court covers 99-02 and some 03's based on VIN
Acura even helps those out of VIN too, with a little coaxing

Y's prob is a junkyard trans was installed in his, so acura wont goodwill the vin without the original trans

Its not a big deal to rebuild- lots of cars use this type of trans now
No shop can give an accurate estimate until inside to see whats worn and whats good, but can say in general if you need everything---$$$ and if its less...
You want as much as possible replaced since you're paying for it thru buying the insurance-
Dave will probably make a call to the local place for you and get the azine hookup

yeah, the dealership is about an hour drive away, and my car's transmission is totally shot, meaning i can drive locally but when it heats ups i'm pretty much screwed, my 30 days to claim insurance is also up, but im waiting another week or two to claim insurance with Mercury Insurance so i won't have to pay much out of pocket.. I'm just debating on what to do

why do you have to wait longer to make a claim? 30 days is up go for it
You paid for the policy right? they expect claims

Check the fine print on the contract for where to have repaired

i'm sorry i havent i updated you u guys on the situation, so its march now, i had my tranny rebuilt in octoberish, by aamco, and they handled everything through my insuracne grp mercury. i onlly paid a 100$ as per my contract and they handled the entire bill. aamco billed them, i did aboslutley nothing. i guess they are good third party insurance to have, and aamco so far has shown no failure in my transmission. lets keep our fingures crossed.

*the reason why i reposted was bc if anyone has similiar issues to me, they can use my experience to their advantage.

This is good to know. I'm gettin an extended warranty after the trans warranty runs out. Don't know which company is good to go with though, since a lot of them are known to try anything in order to deny claims.
