99 tl audio

i tried a couple other areas but no response
99 TL Audio

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have searched and talked to stereo shops and cant seem to get a consistant answer. I want to replace the headunit and speakers. Is this a straight forward install or do i have to by pass the bose amp. ( I have single cd bose no navi).

1) headunit. is it pretty much follow instructions to remove old unit, attach new unit to wiring harness and dashkit then replace

2) speakers, crutchfield says 6 1/2 will not fit BB and CC say yes.

I do not mind spending a couple hours replacing the audio. I do not want to get into alot of splicing/cutting and fabricating.

so can anyone tell me what I am up against, maybe a highlevel of steps. would i be better off paying 150 or so to have it installed or spend a few hours and know there were no shortcuts taken. i am reasonably handy with tools and can follow instructions (crutchfield mastersheet) pretty good. i just would like an indea of what i would be getting myself into before i started.

thanks

Straight forward. The amp is in the HU. Replace the HU and you bypass it. Fronts are 6.5. You may need spacers depending on the speakers you buy due to the oem speakers being fairly shallow. You will loose the OEM Sub unless you do some custom wiring to get teh signal back to the sub amp, and a new trigger for turning it on.
Metra makes a dash kit. It matches the dash best when wetsanded with 400-600 then 1000 grit sand paper (smooths out the texture and finish closert to that of the dash)

It depends on the kind of 6.5. I installed Image dynamics 6.5s and the magnet was too big to fit in the stock hole so I had to trim some metal out to get it to fit. And yeah more then likely you will need a spacer. If I remember correctly with window rolled down there is about 2" of clearance.

What he said PLUS

I suggest adding a amp to power the door speakers. The factory bose is pretty decent but just adding a HU and speakers will not improve the overall sounds that much.

Usually the better speakers arent that shallow. I had to make a 3/4 MDF ring and the doors are trimmed out to make my huge Alpine SPX woofers fit. Make sure u waterproof those MDF rings.

If u need anyideas heres what my dash looks like. The wood can be found at selectproducts.com...

Since those pics I have upgraded the cd player and extra set up Ring Radiator tweets in the front...
