Exclamation 99 Tl

Hey All,

Just thought I'd let you know that I just joined acura-tl.com, and that I bought a 99 TL, Satin Silver w/o navi. Lets see.... I'm 18, a student at Auburn University, but home is Atlanta. I've found a lot of useful topics here, and you guys have helped me decide what and what not I want to do to my car. I do have a question though - I want to put Type-S guages on the car, and found some on Ebay, but the owner said he bought them for his 99, which wont work because it is for the five speed. Did the transmission/engine, or something change after 99? Also, what are the best things to do without spending a lot of money to increase horsepower. As you know, I'm a college student, and am sort of on a limited budget, hehe. I'm driving a 99 Infiniti I30 now, and pick up the TL on thursday this week. Looking forward to many years of satisfaction from this TL, hope you guys can help me maintain and add things to my car!

Thanx,
Ryan

Congrats on your 99 TL purchase what color is it? I also have a 99 TL and starting in 2000 side airbags were added as well as a fifth gear taking the MPG from 27 to 29. I personally love the 4 speed and 2 MPG reall doesnt matter to me. As you may or may not know tht 99 TL was not included in the exteneded warranty that all the other TL/CL cars got which extended the warranty on the transmission to 100,000 miles. I guess the 4 speed just holds up better and has less failures.

I also thought of putting 2000+ gauges in my 99 but I didn't want to risk it. I wonder if there are enough 99 ers to get some custom made like the other guys... probably not though.

Well enjoy your car i'm sure you will love it. Every time I get in my car I think "Damn I drive a nice car i'm one luck mofo! "

Welcome to the 99 TL club!

I also have a 99 TL.

Breakdown:
99 TL = 4 gears, can control 1st to 2nd gear using SS
00 TL = 5 gears, can't control 1st to 2nd gear using SS, side airbags

AK_MOBBER, I think you meant 02 gauges.

As far as power, your best bet is to get the cold air intake (CAI), preferably AEM or Injen. It will cost ~$240 with the bypass valve. Oh don't forget to buy the bypass valve (keeps water from flooding your engine) for safety reason.

One more thing, our 99 TL is faster than the 99 I30. :p

If you don't want to spend the $240 for a CAI, you can always remove your intake resonator and add a drop-in K&N air filter. Total cost for this is just the cost of the filter (~$45).
For instructions on how to do remove the resonator, just do a search. It worked really well for my 99 TL.
Cheers!

99 tranny more reliable than 2000 and up

Lower your car with H&R sports. It changes the way the car looks more than the kit I think. I have my resonator removed too and it has been working out good. 6000k is also a good thing to get. Did I mention the 02 tails and the FREE chrome shift plate mod?

Am I just not twisting it hard enough(counterclockwisd)? It feels like its bout to snap the metal rod when I twist it. Any advice?

Oh yeah, welcome to the club. I too bought a 99TL at the beginnng of this year and I love it!

Ok great, I had already thought of the intake, and i will go ahead and get the bypass, because i read a post on here where one poor guys engine got flooded! cant have that! So, I also thought about that tornado fuelsaver, that adds like 10-15 hp.... any of you guys know about that? One day, I want to add the navi to mine, just for looks, I love the way it looks, clean cut, but I want the DVD one, not the HD... I added a Xenon conversion kit to my I30, because I hate those damned ricey cheap bulbs, cost me $600, but well worth it. I'm excited to see how the acura ones compare to my kit, even though I had 9004, which weren't aimed right, I do want the 6000K ones soon, but thats a project down the line. I'll update you guys when I get my car on thursday.... pretty excited!

2 more days! We actually bought a Canadian one, I'm canadian, so my family found an awesome deal on a TL, US $13,200, with 50K miles on it. My dad is flying up there thursday morning, and bringing it back this weekend, so I will drive back to Atlanta to pick it up on Monday. This is the longest wait I've ever had to deal with..... And it doesn't help that you guys keep telling me how awesome this car is...... I'll keep you guys posted, but I will do the chrome shift plate I think.... My moms got a 540, and its all wood grain by the shifter, sometimes it really pisses me off because the glare is awful, so I'll have to think about it!

Shift Plate mod is the bomb, Yes sometimes sun can kill you, but you get use to it, Best mod i have done, cost like nothing, just need paint thinner.

Its easy to remove it, take out the little cut out on right side, and then pry the outer black ring up, and then from the right side the shift plate comes up and boom, its off, its cake, then get some paint thinner, and like a paint pan, and put it in there, you'll see the paint come off like a skin, took me 5 minutes for my paint thinner to work, and then just wash off in water, and it looks great, Now i keep a rag in my car to always polish it, because you see fingerprints and smears on it now

Hope I helped
