99 Nav said "unformatted hard disk"

My Nav sometimes it working and sometimes it does not. when it does not working, it has error "unformated hard disk,...check with dealer". About 6 months ago, it is not working at all. It always says "unformatted disk...or something like that".

How can I reformat it? or is there a way to get it working again without costing much?

Your HD is toast. Paul Mooney sells a flash replacement for 99 Nav systems.

You can also build one these yourself. All you need is a PCMCIA/Compact Flash adapter, a 512 MB Compact Flash card and a copy of the navigation files for your region. That adapter can be found on ebay for less than $10 shipped. 512 MB CF cards are pretty cheap these days.

Search the forum for "PCMCIA" for all sorts of "how to" information on doing this.

All,
After searching through the forums, I found the solution.
Go to http://navhelp.com/
and order from there for $135 shipped.
This is the best solution i guess. If you order the adapter and the Flash card, some cards may work some don't. some dealer charge for a fee some can do it for free, but it is a hassle to go back and forth to dealer.

I think $135 is good way to go at http://navhelp.com/.
I am not affiliate with that website and not also advertise for them. I just found it helpful.
I just placed my order, not try it out yet, but i heard other members got from him and it works.

Mister_TL, your problem is same as mine, most of the time the hard drive failed due to extreme heat, shock and so on (rarely failed from unit). order new one from the site above. or you can wait until i got mine working then I confirm with you. or you can go to the website and ask him.

Buying a pre-made unit from Paul Mooney is a sure fire solution. Paul is a reputable seller and you can be sure that the units he sells will work fine. If you have a problem, Paul will help you resolve it.

But many forum members, including myself, have been able to assemble identical units for less than $20. Paul uses the same PCMCIA adapters with 512 MB CF cards that you can buy yourself.

My local Acura dealer loaded the navigation files on my assembled unit for no charge. Not all dealers will do this for free but the files can be found for download on the internet if you're willing to search a little bit. All you need is a inexpensive Compact Flash card reader to load the files.

The last update for that system was in December 2002 and that's what Paul loads onto his CF-based hard drive replacements. As far as I've seen, it is not possible to load anything more curent as the data does not exist in the needed format.

Received the hard drive today from navhelp.com.
It works perfectly.
I think you have to have the Navi 4 digits code for it to work like the Radio code. my navi asked for the code when I put it in today. I did disconnected the battery few days ago.
