99 3.2TL...What's Your Opinion? (PICS)

Hey All! I am finally back after moving back to college. The first day of classes sucked! Never take 9 classes at one time when most of them are general education. OUCH!!!! Anyways...I am looking at this 99 3.2TL because my funds got cut from $20K to $10K. I know...what a drop! Well...it is fully loaded inside and outside. Everything runs perfectly and it has no dints, dings, or scratches of any major kind. Tires are brand new and NO lights come on inside. What a blessing...not check engine or oil or anything...first time that has ever happened to me! What I want to know is what do you guys think of it? There is a problem though, it is being sold for $9,995 because it has 117,000 miles. Yeah, I know...a lot! Just tell me guys what your opinions on getting it would be whether good or bad. I want a wide variety of people's opinions. Thanks all for your help. Cheers All!

I'll take the first shot at it. The car looks really clean from what I can see from the pics. I think the price is more than reasonable if you don't take the mileages in the count. Considering the mileages (117K), if I were you I think I'll pass on this one. Do you need a car at this moment? Maybe you can save up a bit to put yourself in a position where you can purchase one with lesser mileages? That's my opinion, I hope it was helpful.

get the vin, check with a dealer... u definetly need to consider warranty... god forbid the tranny....

you see.... they fill the car with some sort of liquid that makes gear switching smooth.... too smooth.... after 200-300 miles you see the truth.... also... look at the paint from all the angles to see any paint jobs... i can't imagine a car with no dings or dents with that many miles because of highway chips and rocks....

just being resonable...

Agree with bbznyc. They most likely had a surface job on the paint (machine buff and removed scartches).

The car might look sweet now, but down the road, BIG problems might come out to haunt you. If you ever get it. Change all the fluids, replace the belts and hoses and plan for a frequent oil change (every 3 months regardless of mileage).

A lot of great people in this forum have the same car and most of them have quite a lot of miles on them and still going strong.

And oh,...down the road, those rims have to go. The car would look awesome on 17s or even 18s.

I really need to get a car as soon as possible so I can make it home from school when I want instead of relying on my roommate (we live in the same town). I can get the rest of the money in September (20K more) so if I waited I know I would have the money. I really just need it to last me 2 years so when I get married I can buy a new/newer one. Basically I need something that is a nice ride and I can put 30K miles on it within the next two years. If I got this I would most definitely get at least a 3year/36Kmile warranty. Sound good? Cheers All!

With a Acura backed warranty it could be ok, but read the fine print because some of these extended warranties only cover certain components within say the transmission, so if some other item goes within the tranny, you are stuck (and how will you really know if they are being straight with you on which component failed?).

As to the high miles, I would want to see the maintenance records, and you should also run a CarFax report to make sure it wasn't a fleet or rental car. I would even stray away if it turns out to be a lease because lease owners as a general rule do not maintain the car as well as a owner would.

Needless to say, I'm recommending caution and more research prior to buying it, however, if you find the car to be ok after your checks, then by all means become a fellow Acura owner.

I have a 99 and love it. If you get a warrentee to cover the tranny for 36k then I would get it. The car looks nice and clean. for 10k I do not think you will get a better car. just check the vin see if it has had a new tranny or any work done. It has the kit ad nicer wheels also which was an expencive option. So I would do it, I like the color if you change the tail lights to the 2002+ it would look great, Good luck!

i dunno if i would go for that one. any modified car in my book is a no no. That car has the body kit and shaved emblems which COULD mean it probably had other mods which COULD also mean it was ragged on. anyways, you never know. i would NEVER buy any car that has any sort of modifications on it, unless its brand new.

Are you freaking serious? Those are factory options. OEM Body kit and the optional rims. You can buy the car just like that from the Acura dealer lot. So you're to tell me that if you saw a factory car with factory options you wouldnt get it? The car has the emblems all intact. You need some serious glasses man.
I shaved my emblems so yeah I really rag the **** out of my car..

You guys are waay to paranoid. You can get a 6th gen V6 Accord for the same price so why not for the TL? Is the same **** and the same tranny probs.

Shaved emblems??????? where???????? Are you looking at the same car as me?

And OEM kit are dealer options (NOT FACTORY OPTION) as well as the Chrome Wheels.

Its the dumbest thing to take modification as a sign of the car being driven ragged. People who put modifications on are the people who actually take care of the damn cars. My cousin's TL right now has 10,000 miles over due for an oil change. Her car is BONE STOCK. My car on the other hand has been babied even with my mods. So now tell me, would you rather buy my car used or my cousins.

I personally say go for it. My 99TL is the best car I ever owned, even my new 03 Accord can't touch. Only thing I would suggest is that you get them to lower the price by atleast a $1000.

I agree that my modded car is well takin care of and not beat on at all. I think it is partly the way the mods are done and if the and tastefull. As far as a moded civic or integra it is a different car and may be beat. I used to beat my 93 civic si hatch but it was still a great car. It all depends on the owner in this case this car is stock and looks well taken care of. try for 9k see what happens. I bought a 99 white just like that w 43k and paid 22.5k almost 2 years ago, they would not budge. This was when the s just came out and was a little pricey for me.

Have you considered a lease option on an 03 or possibly a rsx or tsx (if you want Acura). My lease totals about 11K over three years on my 03 TL-S

if you can get some kind of warranty for a few hundred more, than that is a great price. I personally know 2 people with over 100,000 miles on theic tls and they are running great.

Question My Offer To The Dealer...

For starters I will NEVER lease. I don't understand how you people do that. You will never OWN anything that way. You just keep paying for something new that you will never fully receive.

How does this offer sound? I am going to offer the dealer $8500 cash and want that to include tax and atleast a 3year/36Kmile full warranty, a full tank of gas, 2 free oil changes, and 4 new tires if they are bad enough. Sound good guys? Cheers!

its a USED car. i doubt the dealer added that to the car when whoever had it sold it to them. it was sold to the dealer that way. im just saying i would rather buy a completely stock used car than a modded (no matter what it is) used car. just something to think about. and like i said, it COULD be ragged on (considering it has a few mods, theres a greater chance). so how about you learn some reading comprehension.

Seems to me the 3.2 TL emblem isn't shaved. Seems to me all these were Dealer installed, so we're not even talking about a modded car.

sounds good if they go for it, but I do not see them going that low and adding a 3 year warrentee to a car with over 100k on it. You will most likely get the car for around 9.5k and have to pay more for the warentee. good luck!

They're not gonna cut the price down for cash. Dealers make a lot of money off financing. Finance the car for that much, then pay it off immediately.

So what...say I will finance it for $8500 and then when they right all the papers up, whip out the money and pay it off? Sounds good, but my parents just bought a 2001 Infiniti QX4 and the dealer was selling it for 25K and my dad talked him down 6K without cash and could have definitely gone farther with cash. A dealer would rather have the money up front because then they know they have it rather then take the chance of somebody going bankrupt or screwing them over and not paying in. Cheers All!

No. You finance a car through a bank. Finance the car, and then pay the bank. Dealers are not impressed by cash up front.

Have you called Acura yet with the VIN to see what type of warranty work was done? Also, did the check all of the pieces on the car for the VIN label? Acuras have VIN labels on the doors, fenders, hood, and trunk. If you don't see those then you should be cautious. Our 99 is a fantastic car and the 99's generally didn't have as many transmission problems as the later years.

So I go to the bank and get a loan for $8500 then go to the dealer and buy it and then drive back to the bank and pay it off? Is this correct? How is that any different then cash?

If you don't know how buying a car works, you really need to check it out before you even start looking for one.

I disagree. I think cash is better. If you make it apparent you actually have the cash to pay outright they should care because you are going to spend the cash either with them or somewhere else. They'd be foolish to loose a sale over a few dollars IMO.

Used cars have a huge profit margin so there should be room to work.

So what if they don't take the deal, you can take your cash elsewhere to find another TL or TLS for a better deal.

They only make money off (or risk) the financing if you finance it through them. Honda Financial Services might give them a cut (if it's a Honda/Acura dealer) but short of that they won't see cash from financing. So if he goes to his bank it's still effectively a "cash" deal b/c the bank cuts the dealer a check and buys the the car. However the advantage of cash is no credit report, not as much paperwork (faxing crap to the lender or bank). It's just a quicker process.

Perhaps I'm wrong It's happened before.

Dude I did read your first post. You dont have to insult my intelligence. You need to comprehend what you wrote in the first place. You said you would not go for the car because it had the modifications of:
1) Factory body kit
2) Optional factory wheels
3) Shaved emblems (which they werent)

And based on those options you assumed that it could be ragged. Those are appearance mods not engine mods bud.
Your basis on these mods are irrelevant to the raggin on the car.

I don't know how to buy a car or anything through financing. I have always bought everything with cash. I HATE credit cards more-the-less debit of any sort whether loans or a credit card. I unfortunately have a student loan in the making because I have to pay for my college myself and I don't have a job during school so I can take roughly 30 credit hours a semester so I can do 4 years in 2 years and save money in the long run. I hope to get a GOOD job as soon as I graduate and then will have the student loan paid off within 2 years max (hopefully 1). Sorry for my stupidity on stuff. I'm just a youngser (19).

Like I said earlier. If I don't get the car for my price (stated earlier, but might offer $9000 instead, but NO MORE), then I will take it else where. If push comes to shove I can maybe hold out until next fall where I will have enough for a 2002 3.2TL Type-S, but I don't know for sure. I have a change to knock my loan down atleast $5000 this summer, but need a car I can drive an hour away to a job everyday during the week. Thought about a Toyota Camry or a Nissan Maxima or possibly even a Honda Accord/Civic, but I found an Acura 3.2TL and quickly made my mind up. I hate GM products so those are basically all I have to choose from. Cheers All!

I say go for it. Assuming you say that you are going to put ~30K miles in 2 years then you should have nothing to worry about. Just don't forget to ask about the warranty and definitely check the VIN. The 99 TL is not as prone to tranny failures as the 00+ models and Type-S. Also, try to knock a few hundred or a grand or two off (doesn't hurt to try).

BTW, I also have a 99 TL with over 82K+ miles and still running strong.

Good luck!
