97 Maxima gives me a run for my money

i was diring down Central Ave last nite, (Scars/YO) and on the section near Movieland i see this Maxima(last gen) with all these kids in it thinkin they were hard. (the car seemed stock, but I think it may of had an exhaust, or just a resonator removed). so drop to 2 and pull a car on him when hes doing 50. then a cool down a wait for him to catch up. and all of a sudden he came out of nowhere and was doing 80 when i was at a slow 45 waitin for him. Then he passed by me and cut me off. and kept up to maybe 100. and it took me at least 3 blocks or so to catch up to him. i thought that i wud have a 97 maxima in no time! but, boy was i wrong. i cut him off much later doing at least 110 (please, no falmaing, i just had to give it to an old maxima). and then he slowed down when i cut him off. but still it took me mad long to catch up to him.

BTW, i JUST took a Grand Prix GT that nite. and totally ****ed up a galant an very old monte carlo. I was dying to race this pimped out IS that was at the lite. (white, eyebrows, 19 crhomes, 4 LCDS, etc) but he wudnt race. got it wud of been such a good race. ne of u guys in YO seen this guy?

Don't feel bad. A car passing you at 80-100 mph while you're doing 45 mph is going to be hard to catch up....even if you have a faster car. It's just that he had momentum going his way. Playing catch up is always hard. Be happy that you did catch up and pass him.

BTW, we can take an auto IS but not the new stick.

97 Maximas are not an easy target. The 190 hp V6 coupled with the 5 speed is not something you can just walk on in a TLP. Sounds like a nice run, though.

As for the 5 speed ISs, you should still be able to hang with it. Autos you should be able to deal with, and though the manual in the IS helps it out, it isn't going to determine the whole race.

A 97 Max with 5 speed hits 0-60 in 6.6 seconds and some have hit high 14s stock. Most will easily hit low 15s if they can drive. Remember, even though it had only 190 hp, it still had 205 ft/lbs of torque and only weighed about 3000-3100 lbs.

Funny thing is, they had a huge debate on Maxima.org regarding 5th gens vs 4th gens (pre 2k2 5th gens that is). I think the 4th gen autos are faster than the 5th gen autos because the 5th gen autos shift too early. pretty funny

Yes the 4th gen. Max auto's are faster than the pre 2k2 5th gen Maxima's the 2k and 2k1's tranny isnt the best. Car and driver got a 4th gen auto to 60 in 7.3 sec in the May 1995 issue. Donot take a 4th gen 95-99 Max for granted auto or 5spd those things can move for the power that they have!

Hey black shadow go over to Maxima.org and they have all of that stuff. I can give you this much, 3rd gen= 89-94 beware of the 92-94 Se 5spd's, 4th gen= 95-99, beware of both auto and 5spd's, 5th gen= 2000-current, beware of some auto's and the 5spds. The 2k2 has the new 255 hp engine and its very quick!

4th gen auto: ~7.3 0-60 15.9 1/4 mile
4th gen 5spd:~6.7 0-60 14.9 1/4 mile
4th gens are from 1995 to 1999 and all have the VQ30DE engine with 190 HP. Weight is from about 2900-3100 lbs depending on equipment/option level.

5th gen auto:~7.3 0-60 15.8 1/4 mile
5th gen manual: ~6.7 0-60 14.9 1/4 mile
5th gens are from 2000-2001 and all have the VQ30DE-K engine with 222 to 227 HP(the limited Anniversary Edition has 5 more HP because of a different exhaust). They weight from about 3050 to 3300 lbs.

While the 5th gens have 32 more HP, they weigh slightly more than the 4th gens and the HP peak is at redline, where it really isn't usable, especially in the autos.
The reason the 2002s are SO much faster is because they made the engine characteristics pretty much the same as the 4th gens, power down relatively low where it is useful.

The 2002s seem to have not been tested in any car magazine (laughing at you if you think that SCC is good at anything except for ricer ads), but from what has been run and verified by actual owners:

auto:0-60 ~6.4 seconds 14.6 1/4 mile
manual:0-60 ~6 seconds 14.4 1/4 mile
