340 Porsche HP vs 260 Acura HP and the winner is...

A friend of mine has owned a Porsche Cayenne S for a few months. Of course it's a great car/truck and very quick according to the owner. Naturally I dropped the glove and said "lets find out how fast it is."

Now the Cayenne has AWD, 340 Porsche V8 horsepower but weighs 5000 pounds. I did the math and was pretty confident but I've owned Porsche's and I know that their performance figures as well as rated horsepower are often understated.

So here's how our match race went. The temp was about 33 degrees and the road, a two lane 65 mph highway with lights, was damp. At the first light the Porsche, with a mighty roar, jumped off the line and had me by about 1/2 a SUV length thanks to AWD. As soon as I hooked up I jumped a car length ahead. The shift to second got me another car length as did the shift to third. A Little discretion backed us both off with the TLS about 5 lengths ahead.

We repeated at the next light with the exact same results. I'm just glad it wasn't a turbo Cayenne or I would have gotten smoked. Good fun with no traffic on the road.

Nice. The TL probably holds more cargo too. Ironic huh?

Yes. It has 340 HP, normally aspirated. The turbo, and I'm not positive, has 450HP so don't mess with one of those!

We had an old racing phrase that went something like this..."If you want to go faster than add lightness."

Moving a beast that weighs 5000lbs requires big engines. I think the Cayenne just came out with a Volkswagen W8 engine that is rated at 0-60 MPH in about 9 seconds. The Cayenne S that I raced is rated at about 0-60 in about 7 seconds. The Cayenne turbo is rated at 0-60 in well under 6 seconds (5.4 comes to mind).

Normal Cayenne.. you'll take it easy.

Cayenne S.. you'll have a fight on your hands

Cayenne turbo.. don't embarrass yourself

My summer ride, a Porsche 968, again, don't embarrass yourself

Yes, thats the one with the VW engine. Just says Cayenne on back.. no "S" emblem or "turbo" emblem.

It also is rated at 0-60 in 9 seconds. I thought it had the VW w-8 engine but I could be wrong. I am sure it is rated at 250 HP and is the same as the VW toureg engine which is anly 220 HP in the VW.

Wait...do you mean to tell me that the 968 will lay waste to a TL?? I have thought about getting a 968 as a fun car for the summer but I just was not sure with the age of the car how well it performed under todays standards. Can you elaborate further :-)

Thanks,
Axe

Sure I can elaborate. My 1995 968 is a 3 liter, 6 speed fun-mobile.
It has a 4 cylinder engine and is rated at 236 HP with less weight than The TL-S.

It should eat up a TL-S if I drive it properly. Like the Acura it has a Variocam with a 7000 RPM rev limit and has 16 valves. It is an extremely drivable and quick car with Porsche handling and brakes.

Like all Porsche's it is geared for higher speeds so although the TL-S may keep up with it initially the faster we go the farther behind goes the Acura.

The 968 was the last and most sophisticated version of the 944 platform.

Hope that helps.

I hope that 968 isn't leaking as much oil as some of the one's I've seen in people's garages. Great car though.

ya my buddy's 944turdo would sink you into the pass seat in a 3rd gear pull and leave you there untill you begged him to slow down but after a few high dollar, high preasure oil hose replacements at 120k miles that thing was sold on autotrader.

unless its got a turbo, the 944 is one damn slooowwwww car. I don't remember much on the 968, but if its based on the 944 4cyl with no turbo I wouldn't go around racing people with it, although I'm sure its an awesome car to drive around in.

The early (1983 to 1986) 2.5 liter 4 cylinder 944 series cars were not fast. 0 to 60 was a tad over 7 seconds.
They increased the displacement to 2.7 liters and then in 1992 to 3 liters. They also threw in a couple of models called the 944S which were 16 valve variations of the 2.5 and 2.7 engines.
The first 3 liter cars were called S-2's and were reasonably fast. They then brought out the Variocammed, 16 valve 968's which are fast with 0-60 times under 6 seconds.
Of course we have the turbo 944's which were more than fast and were easily boosted to over 300 HP with the help of a chip, making them unreal.
The point is that there were many variations of the theme. Many 944 series cars are Acura fodder, some, not so much and many you're going to get your lunch handed to you.
Pick your fights wisely :-)
