2nd tranny gone at 140k.. will Acura replace?

my bro has a '00 TL... had his 1st tranny replaced around 70k miles...
its at 140k now and its showing all the signs of a dead tranny... revs to redline while shifting, hard/delayed shifts, etc... i kno its about to go..

my question is: will Acura replace the tranny again for free? i kno the updated warranty was 7 years/100k miles, but would/are they still replacing under good faith?

any one have any experiences?

thanks

As much as I hate to say it, I highly doubt it.

yes thats what i figured... how much is a new tranny? $2-3k?

would insurance cover it?

would it even be worth it to get a new tranny on a 140k mile car? or just get a new car completely

its 109k miles and 7years+9 months now- a little bonus for us

my inside tech at dealer says they recently did one at same mileage- comp
Its all about dealing ONLY with the SERVICE MANAGER not the service WRITER

manager talks to regional rep- says hey we did one before, can we go labor only paid by customer 600-800$ and we pick up the trans-
or split cost 50/50 2 grand each
they are pretty good about it if you're cool- You love your car- have it maintained- maybe you buy parts from them- sent other friend in to buy car etc.
bring donuts and be well treated for sure

its about 4 grand parts and labor- retail

a well loved TL will go past 200k miles and smile
So you have to change a water pump and timing belt- way later than any regular car, and throw some upgraded brakes and shocks on it- you have a car that doesnt lose value every month- and is a unique style on the road

has been official for a long time

and if you really need to get technical on them-
a court decision says our odometer reads 5% fast, that would mean 114.5k indicated miles is 109k actual miles- and the courts ~intent~ was we get 109k ~real miles~ coverage

This arguement has resulted in coverage over 109 for a few members

Yes, the extended warranty on the transmission expires at 109,000 miles or 7 years + 9 months, whichever occurs first. I would guess that pretty much every 1999 TL has hit the 7 year + 9 month limit. Some 2000 TLs are reaching the time limit so those owners might want to check for their car's original in-service date.

Also note that cars with salvage tiles and some 2003 TLs are not covered.

In the event that it isn't covered, take it to a local shop and have it rebuilt. Rebuilds run less than $3k for these transmissions.

Try to see if you can talk to the SERVICE MANAGER of acura first to try to see if you can strike a deal. If I were you, I'd just use that 3k as a down payment on something else if you cannot get a deal for a rebuilt or new tranny. I know car payments are a pain but it is a piece of mind thing I suppose.

If the first replacement was done post 2/2005, I would go ahead and rebuild it in that case. Those are the updated ones.

A genuine original 2001 trans--- I would want the factory rebuilt JUST for the new improved case

That's always an option. But you would need to make sure that the local shop uses all the latest internal parts since Acura made some changes to improve the reliability. (The housing design was also updated with new oil flow passages and a local shop probably won't replace that.)

If you don't get the updated parts you may have another failure prone transmission.

The aftermarket has updated kits for this transmission. Raybestos makes the updated friction parts and transtec includes it with their kits afaik.
