So I just removed the resonator and I love the sound at high RPM, but I hate the low rpm hum. I think I have a solution for that though. I think if I cut off the Longer resonator tube ( and plug the hole) and leave the short one I will get rid of the idle hum. I will try it tonight I think.

alright guys, i jsut took my car for a spin and after flooring it this time, i noticed the hum at idle, but it wasnt there before. im guessing that it really neads to be sealed or somethin.

so when you had the stock one on and had it taped shut, did you have any hum? I dont think the tape would ever be a problem, I may just do that, so I can get the extra sound

i never really took it out, i just taped it up. this is the first time i noticed the hum though, so im gonna open it back up and see if WOT did any damage to the tape. Stay tuned...

yeah i think we are on the right track here, the icebox is plastic, and all the other CAI's are "filters on a stick". hmmmm maybe the rubber piping resonates too much, u would thikn the opposite of rubber wouldnt u? interesting....

I think it's just the sound of the engine. There are actually two resonators there, a long one (for low pitched sounds) and a short one (for high pitched sounds like the idle hum). Tomorrow I'm going to try eliminating the long tube on the resonator and leaving the short one intact. Hopefully I'll get the nice WOT sound without the hum.

A hockey puck fits perfectly in the resonator hole. I have found that since is solid rubber you can tighten it better and because it is solid I do not have any unwanted sounds. Besides, now the NHL is on strike hockey pucks are available!

I used a hockey puck for the upper resonator. I like the fact that I can tighten the hose clamp to something solid so I do not have to worry about leaks. I have not noticed any unwanted sounds. With the NHL on strike there are lots of pucks out there!

After some testing I realized that the longer of the two tubes in the resonator is the one responsible for removing the hum. This is the complete opposite of what I thought to be true, but I'm no expert on noise cancelation. I cut the end off the shorter resonator, and cut the short one off near the top of the unit. Then I epoxied the end back onto the resonator to plug the hole. The car is quieter than if I had removed the resonator all together, but the sound is nice. I would say it's right inbetween if you had the unit in and if you had it out.

whoaaaa cool. so umm, how much do hocky pucks go for.. and do i use the standard size? like the pro ones or something? i dont know anything about hockey, so can i buy it at like modells or sports authority?
and also, when i stick the hockey puck in, wouldnt it just slip into the hole all the way?

Another theory is the hum comes from the air moving over the space in the tube. Similar to a person blowing over a coke bottle. That may be why the hockey puck trick didn't have the hum.

and to answer your question about how it might pop in all the way... i believe that it wouldn't if you tighten the metal clamp hard enough.
btw i think this thread is just uber cool. it's kinda rare nowadays to get a thread on something entirely fresh!

bahaha.. damn. where's the hockey puck specialists?? i want to do this as soon as possible and i need to know what im supposed to use.. all i know is that there are those black thick disc shaped things that are maybe like 2 inches thick and 3-4 inches in diameter?? please help us with the size issue.. and if its just the standard NHL ones, we just have to go to sports authority or modells and jsut get the ones with the NHL official puck logo on it right? cause i know that on basketballs they have the NBA official size logos... that would make life easier..

yeah i think all the hockey puckz are regulated size, but we'll have to look into that

Pucks only come in one size. I do not see how it could get sucked into the throttle body. The ouck is quite heavy with just a touch of a roughness on the edge for the clamp to be tightened down on. I still need more road testing before I remove this from my completion list.

i didnt have the duct tape over the hole, i duct taped the top of hte resonator and stuck it back in. i still got the hum though, maybe WOT tore part of the tape, ill tell u when i install the hockey puck!
if the whole hockey puck thing works out, i think we should dub it the "Puck Mod"

i bought a hockey puck too!!! haha
i was hella embarrased though. i went up to the guy at Sports Authority and asked him "which is the puck that people uses for pro hockey? you know.. that nhl puck. the standard round thick disc looking ones. i dont know anything about hockey, but i just need a puck, which one am i supposed to get?" then he stares at me like im retarded and hands me over the only puck that they have.. the black rubber ones that are all standardized.. if not there was the plastic orange one.. i was dumbfounded but its ok! i can do this project now! "puck mod" first thing tommarow morning
