2009 TL style vs 2nd gen.

Is it just me or does anyone else out there think the newly stlyled TL looks just awful.

I just saw it at the San Francisco auto show and was shocked. It seemed cheap and gawdy as compared to the 01 - 04... models. Especially the new grill. The dash and console looked like something out of a bad Sci-Fi movie.

I thought it was just me but the sales geek asking if I was in the market to upgrade openly admitted that a lot of people do not like it.

Then I looked at the RL....cripes....the trunk lid looks like it belongs to a different car.

What were they thinking?

/Steve

I think its hideous. Not a big fan of the way Acura is going overboard with the chrome up front. Also-to me the back looks like the front end. Too radical for me.

New TL

I think it looks a little weird too, but sometimes these new styles take some getting use to, then they start looking better. I bet if I had one, I could learn to love the styling....

What does everyone on this board have against chrome anything?

lol, one of my friends snapped a pic of the new TL for me while he was driving the other day and sent it to me... I'm not afraid to say I cringed a bit when I saw it...

Both he and I agree that the 2G body style is the best the TL's had thus far.

i actually think it has a lot of potential. someone did a chop, looks mean.

aside from the aesthetics, tech and performance in the 4th gen is ridiculous.

Yeah... my first comment to him was that I wish we could put that car into the 2G shell... it'd be perfect

I saw one today on the road for the first time. I had seen it at the dealer before but never on the road. The side and back look nice but that grille needs a serious adjustment.

The 6spd sh-awd doesnt come out till 2010 correct? I think the front is ugly mainly becuase its a very futuristic look. They may have wanted to sturr up some commotion to get people talking about their car more. idk but 300 hp stock sounds pretty nice to me

i saw one today at the drugstore....the owner and I walked out of the store about the same time - I was checking out his ride and he was checking out mine, unaware of the other. his comments (about mine) were good - mine (about his) were not.

not a car i'd buy for myself, but i wouldn't take it back if someone else bought me one.....

Smart Man..

4th gen is just out right hideous IMO. No offense to the 3rds, but to me, the 2nd gen is the best looking one.

i think the new line of 09's are ridiculously ugly. i mean that for the tl, tsx, and the rl. i think that acura's design group must have been smokin when they put the design through production.

then again, it might be something that grows on me... but for right now... NOO

sorry if I'm a little lazy and didn't read all the posts. But I work for a Acura dealer and dealers are paint matching the front grill; leaving only the emblem chrome. There are also some dealerships reportedly matching the chrome trunk piece as well.
Don't knock on the dash at all, it's a great design and the new navigation/back up camera on the "tech" package the new name for "Type-S". Seriously before anyone completely a develops a negative opinion on this car go down to a dealer and take one for a spin, especially an SH-AWD model. Oh and for those wondering why a 6speed hasn't been spotted those come out next fall.
Once again sorry if some of this is known or already posted

sorry for double post. 5min edit blocked me. :O

Plus to the guy to brought up the RL. This is probably the best RL to date from Acura. It feels like an 04 3.5RL but throw it in "sport" mode and holy shit you haul ass. It has the heated/cooled seats with 3 settings for each temp, great handling once again and seriously the body of this car saved it. I definitely like it more the the 05-08 body style, its more pronounced and less pod shaped which has always bugged me even before I bought my TL and got into the Acura brand.
Basically same point; go down to the dealer and drive one(if you can convince a sales rep to let you near one lol) and also pick up the new accessory brochure. The new accessory wheels for the SH-AWD TL are freakin amazing.

of course it could have been designed better, but if modded right with aftermarket support, it can look very appealing

chop someone did on the RJ thread about his new wheels

I dont doubt that the performance is top notch now. I would expect them to get better, more high tech etc. as they move forward. But to me, the outside design is sooo bad, that I wouldnt give it a try.

so i finally saw this beast on black friday because the alderwood mall had a 09 tl black on black with painted grill and the cool black and silver rims from acura of seattle on display and i must say i was really impressed.

it looked great!

people say how it looks so big but have you people seen the cars of today? all the new lexuses look huge and this is going with the trend. the interior is amazing and the exterior looks awesome. everyone who was walking by was ooh and ahhing at the car. i think a facelift is in order in a few years but it sure looks damn good to me.

i'd still take a 2nd gen over a 3rd or 4th but if i was shopping for a car for my dad who loves lexuses i bet i could convince him to pick up a tl instead.
can't wait to see the 6 speed version and eventually a type s...

btw this has been discussed in the 4th gen forum a LOT. so this should be either moved or closed.

kthxbye

The 2nd gen TL is the reason why Acura made a ton of money back in the late 90's/ early 2000's. It was sleek low slung design. The 3rd gen was a bit short and a little higher but still successful. The 4th gen is a POS .

If Acura wanted to compete with BMW, AUDI, M-B and LEXUS. They gotta making this crap styling. I love my 99 TL, it still looks great against the cars of today.

I think another problem is the rims look WAY too small for that car.

See thats another issue I have-the lack of a distinct bumper Whats with that little step thing?

That car needs to come standard with 19's or 20's.

I actually like the TL with the rims and stuff in that chop above. Once there is a 6 spd model I would buy one if I had the money. Amazing engine and interior - its just a new look that is gonna take a while to get used to. With that chrome piece on the trunk painted I would like the back 10 times better

I also think the new model is hideous, I was eager to see it first hand here in the Miami Auto Show and when I did see it, I wasn't too impressed. The exterior and interior of the car seem like something Acura designed to catch the eyes of 45 year olds who are suffering from Mid-life Crisis.

The 4th gen looks urgly inside and out. I don't know where're those design eng. get that style from? I'd rather love the 3rd and 2nd gen look.

I hate the back and front of the new TL.

But I'm sure with the aftermarket parts will help address these issues.

A li'l to futuristic for me. I glanced at the grill and didn't bother looking at the rest of the car...it was that hideous! The new Accords look fantastic! Acura is suppose to be BETTER!

Some of us 45 year olds simply enjoy good cars, and put our 'mid-life' needs into another category..... (I'll upload a few pic's once my noob-cant-post-or-see-shit status is lifted.)
IMHO tho - the '09 is a bit fugly (to be polite.)
A guy in my apt. complex has a silver '00 TL, and every time I see it I like the way it looks - stock to the bone. Then I get into my silver '02 TL-S and smile even more. I could've grabbed a newer ride, but why? Mileage and safety factors have not improved t-h-a-t much to make it worth while, and they sure as hell dont look better to my eye. Oh, and avoiding car payments has been my mantra for years. Insurance is bad enough
