2003 HID conversion kit
#2
Welcome Tailfin joe !!!
Most all of the aftermarket ""HID" replacement kits require some minor wire splicing to adapt to our existing wiring. Check out the "DIY" sticky for installation procedures and tips when using these kits. Many previous threads on the subject are available if ya try searching.
The kits are relatively inexpensive at approximately $100. If ya don't feel comfortable with cutting a few wires, most automotive electronics specialty shop could do the job in about an hour.

My stock ballasts were still running perfect when i redid my headlights. There was probably 450k miles on them at that point.

Yeah, my 2000 TL also has the original components. Only ever had to replace the bulbs with a "Phillips" brand.
I think that moisture is what kills the system most of the time.

this is not a science experiment- its cutting off an existing connector
and install new connector in same exact place!
can you operate pliers?
everything else is already there on the car with our stock hid system
the key is the upgrade you get with modern bulb and ballast technology
new lights are way brighter than your 13 year olds~
still happy with hidextra.com for the budget minded
suggest 5000 k bulbs

I was able to install a hidextra.com 6000k D2R kit very very quickly on my car. It really is two wires on each side of the car, I stripped and soldered the new harness to the old harness and my HIDs came back to life... even a little brighter than before. Really was worth it, and $60, free shipping was a true beauty.
Gonna do a projector retrofit later in the summer, just so I don't have to deal with these skanky reflectors anymore.

If you truly want a plug-and-play upgrade, why not just go to theretrofitsource.com and buy the Mitsubishi ballasts? They're the same as the current OEM ones and plug right in. You can find a "D2S-to-AMP" converter that plugs into the D2R headlight socket and provides a standard aftermarket HID pin-out if you want to use a different bulb. Otherwise that's the easiest fix, by far. Those Mitsu ballasts last over a decade if installed correctly. Downside is $200. Personally do as everyone else is saying and just bite the dust and solder in a new ballast.
