2002 Transmission Problems?
I am looking at buying a new vehicle, possibly a 2002 Infiniti I35 or a 2002 TL. I had pretty much decided on a TL, but I then read about failing transmissions. Are these failing transmissions mostly on TL Type S models rather than just the base TL or are the transmissions failing on both models?
Please tell me anything you know about the transmissions on 2002 TL's. I do prefer the TL to the I35, but I will do what I think is best as far as reliability.

Hi I don't know much about I35 but I know that I am starting to regret to bought the TL2000.It has more trouble than what I expect, even transmition problem,Dealers sevice ect................................ if I can buy again I will go for IS300.Buy this is just my own opinion.
2k2 is right; the number of tranny problems are very low relative to the numbers sold. What you're witnessing is probably the "b!tchin' board syndrome", where people write on the online forums only when something goes wrong.
I'm with Daverman & 2K2. I too have seen a handful of members complaining about their transmission woes and their prophecies of impending transmission doom for those reckless souls who "dare" to mod their engines.
I didn't want any of my brothers to feel like I was relishing their misfortune, so I kept my experiences to myself. But truth be told - my transmission has behaved absolutleyperfectly. No grinding, whining, clunking, slipping, stalling, refusing to shift, hunting for gears etc - ever !. And I'm always downshifting, engine braking, bouncing off the rev limiter in SS so don't assume this is because I baby it. (This is my first auto trans in my 18 yrs of driving and I just can't keep my hand off the damn shift lever). In the more relaxed times I just drive in D5, it also performs flawlessly - silent and smooth, with completely imperceptable shifts (except when the tach needle drops with each upshift.)
I don't think I'm just one of the lucky few. I'm probably just one of the silent majority.

I am generally happy with my wife's '02 TL. Got about 8k on it. Tranny is fine. That doesn't mean there won't be anything wrong with it. 8k is nothing. Look for people that have 75-100k on their 2000 TL. I'd like to know if those trannies still shift smooth.
I don't think you will find that many people with that kind of mileage. The 5-speed auto has only been in use on the TL since '00 and I don't know if they used it in another car before that.
