Unhappy 2002 TL-S Transmission Problems

I have had my '02 TL-S for 5 months now. It has about 9,500 miles on it. Yesterday, I started to notice serious transmission problems on my car. The problems continued and today the car would violently jerk while driving. At the same time the car would stay in constant redline while driving. The gears would, also, not shift properly. The gears would jump from 2nd to 4th and from 5th to 2nd. I couldn't even use the semi-automatic shifter. The "Engine", "VSA", and the "Caution Sign" lights trued on, as well as the "D5" shift location lights started blinking. I was not able to drive the car over 30MPH.

I have dropped the car off at my dealer, should know tomorrow as to what the problem is.

Has any one experienced similar problems? If so, can someone give me advice as to what to do. If the dealer says that I need to replace the transmission, I would rather return the car and get a new one. I just don't want to deal with a car that starts to give problems before it has even reached the 10,000-mile mark.

And here I was thinking that Acura makes the most reliable cars in the market. Am I soooo wrong about that...

I see this is your first post so I assume you are not aware of the extensive discussions that have been had on this topic!

I experienced the same problem. Turned out my tranny was one of the MANY that had been manufactured wrong! Took me about 7 weeks to get mine back, although that was because there was a national backorder at the time. I'm sure your tranny will need to be replaced also. Hopefully it won't take that long. I think the backorder has been filled. HOPEFULLY!!! :p

Sorry, should've done a search before creating a new thread.

rmarin2,
Did you experience any more problems after they replaced your tranny? Is it good to keep the car after they replace the tranny? Or should I be looking at getting rid off the car?

SoundSpeed,
Thanks...

But, I'm sure with so many people having the same problem we can all file a large-scale complaint with Acura Cooperation of America and the BBB. I'm sure that we can all do something about it, Acura can't just brush this off.

I mean I am so pissed that this kind of stuff happened to a new car which I paid over $30,000+.

Also, I think I probably messed up my engine because I drove the car to my dealership and the tranny was acting up a lot. I guess I will have to wait to see...

As a person that has had his transmission replaced twice in only 7 months and 27000 miles, I can confidently tell you that your transmission is shot!

As others have stated, do a seach and you will get more info than you ever could have imagined on dead trannies.

When my first tranny went in June (or so), it did exactly as yours did. I wouldn't worry about messing up your engine. As long is you weren't driving with it in the redline, you'll be fine.

As for getting Acura to do something on a large scale -- Good F-ing Luck!!! When my 2nd tranny went in November, there was about a 30-45 day back-order on trannies and there were about 30 people ahead of me on the list across the nation. I got the car back after 30 days (earlier than anticipated). Acura did agree to pay my monthly payment for the month is was in the shop. Before I asked for that, I mentioned pursuing the lemon law route. The agreed to paying my car payment without hesitation. Others didn't get such an easy deal.

I would definitely call Acura's customer service line and complain.

Keep us posted on how it goes.

Good luck.

I've had my car back for a little over a week and so far everything seems fine. I have been taking it easy on it. Trying to break it in again. I see no reason for getting rid of the car. The tranny is made by Acura and its brand new, most likely! The rest of the car is perfect. It's not like your putting in an aftermarket tranny or having it repaired by some no name garage!! My opinion anyway!

Sorry to hear about it dude. On the sunny side, it's under warranty, mines about out and I'm starting to have problems.
