Thumbs up 2002 Acura TL Type-S THE BEST CAR EVER.

My TL had 64000 miles the day i was leaving Atlanta, GA to relocate to Los Angeles, CA. It's like 2300 miles. First day 1000 miles of driving. Second day after around 850 miles "check engine" light when on. I stopped and this gas station to fill up my tank thinking that this something litttle like emission problem or oxigen sensor or whatever. i saw this mechanic and he checked the light. And guess it was my lovely transmision. HA-HA-HA 430 miles from my destination in the middle of Arizona. The mechanic guy said there is no chance of me getting to LA anytime soon with that car. Well i beg the difference my friends. With a full tank of gas and 430 miles away from my new home. 80 m/h non stop with broken transmision for 430 miles without any kind of damage to the car besides the transmision of course. This car is super i could not beleive that a car can go that far without transmision. Take into considoration that i went to Acura Carland in Roswell and they said that my transmision is actually in "fenomenal" condition and they wanted to change my motor mounts for $1200. My mounts are perfectly fine. Please be aware of Acura Carland Of Roswell there service department SUCKS you guys now what.

2002 ACURA TL TYPE-S IS THE BEST CAR EVER

i have an 02tl-s and i have been driving with a broken trans for about 3k miles and and about 7months now. cruising is not bad its the shifting that pisses me off its delayed by about 2-3 seconds and my 3rd gear sometimes work and sometimes doesnt. but im still looking for a 6speed cl-s clip

In carlands defense, they have NO real way of knowing if the trans is in good shape other than the fluid. It can be perfectly normal acting one min then completely gone the next.

The key here is- when you have the failing trans syndrome- and it usually will last a while- by staying on the freeway, which does not require constant shifting of 2nd and 3rd gear- which are the weak clutches problem we have-, you can make it home- whether 20 or 400 miles.

Smell the dipstick for trans- burned?
go and drive at 25 and 35 mph light throttle cruising and stomp the gas and hold to floor
should downshift cleanly and firmly then launch forward- without revs jumping up
If not- trans history
It may take a few weeks before it acts up again- then maybe a flashing D5 light will occur- and the acura dealer can pull a code indicating failure

The front motor mount is a very common failure- many of us getting the free trans need it- the tech sees it while on the lift- you can drive a long time and never even know it was broken- and the side mount often goes too in that case
With the trans removed for warranty replacement,, its 3/10th of 1 hour labor about 30 bucks and 100-120 dollars just part!! the very hi tech motor mount.
With the trans in- 3 hours labor @100-120 per hour!
side mount is much cheaper part and easily replaced when doing water pump-timing belt job at 105k miles

If OP has not already done so- go meet the service manager at your local dealer and tell them what happened. If its not funky today- at least you are a known face to them next month.
Treats for the shop like donuts or ice cream bars are a goodwill gesture that will get repaid to you many times over IMO and experience

I am really impressed that the OP went 430 miles on a tank of gas at 80 mph- thats awesome in a TL!

I have done that too I think if you set cruise and keep a steady foot that its really easy to get 30+ in this car. Just make sure the service is up to date (which mine is) and a TL gets pretty good mileage.

Acura repalaced my tranny really fast it took them only couple of days plus they also change some sort of electronic wiring console that cost like few hundred bucks but they did it for free.
As far as Acura Carland they run computer dignostics on the car before I leave after I went there after I started feeling that I have these wierd pause between 2nd and 3rd gear. Which they said it was the engine mounts. They did not now what are they talking about my tranny was almost broken at that time what broke it was the continues driving.

The key in momemts like this is to hit it hard till you past 3rd gear and than you are good to go.

It was great expirience.

rajca- check local aamco or cottman trans rebuilders- $2500
you want to ask how many TipTronics they have done- if only a few- it takes 3 attempts to fix yours. not good~

When on cruise control- get your foot off the gas pedal- like flat on the floor
you add slightly more fuel just by resting your foot on the pedal--on cable operated system- gen 3 I dont know about

one of my bros friend works at acura as a master tech and said he can get me a rebuild trans for $1350 and he would install it for me for $300. which is a great deal but knowing that im pushing 300whp and 260wtq (more power on the way) its gonna break soon again. so im just saving for and looking for a 6speed clip
