2000 Transmission Problem!?
Hey everyone,
Still pretty new here, but have a problem I thought I'd throw out there. It's the weirdest thing. It's happened 3 times so far and makes me nervous. When driving in manual mode I pass through 1st and 2nd gear (without pressing + on the shifter) in second around 3500 rpm's I try to upshift and the car stays in 2nd. I hit it again and again but it still stays in 2nd. WTF? I get off the gas and put the car into auto mode and the car stays in 2nd gear! (You can tell by the rpm's not going down.) I shift back to manual mode and all of the sudden the car is in 5th gear and the RPM's drop all the way down.
The only other things I can say I noticed is that it usually happens when I'm accelerating pretty hard and No, the TCS isn't kicking in (I originally thought that was the issue).
I know I can bring it to the dealership, but I know they're not going to be able to duplicate the problem since it's only happened 3 times in the past 4 weeks. Any suggestions out there that might help me out? I'm concerned that this might be the start of a bigger problem.

Acura have this stupid "ENGINE PROTECTION SYSTEM" that limits the RPM. So if the speed is too slow for nd gear...it will not let you change it to the thrid gear. Same as for down shift...if the speed is too high for 1, 2, or 3rd gear...the transmition won't allow you to do so. So in other words...your transmition is perfectly ok.

Whoa!- flashback. My ex-girlfriend always said she had to repeat herself to get me to pay attention.
I understand what you're saying, but it seems weird because I'm trying to shift about 3500 to 4000 rpm's which should be perfectly fine. I guess I can just wait it out and see what happens, I still have 3 years left on my warranty.

Just bringing up my dead topic for an update. This problem happened again last week and this time even shifting to automatic to manual to automatic to even neutral would not make the car shift out of 2nd gear. I called Acura and the service manager said to bring the car in ASAP because it sounds like a major problem. He told me to not use manual shift mode at all until they look at the car.
The car went into the shop this morning and the service manager called the Acura tech-line and they said they have seen this once before and I need the "computer" replaced. The "computer" being the PCM. The part is on back-order so I got my car back tonight, but was told to NOT use sport-shift until the part gets replaced.
To sum up, if you have this problem too, it's is NOT normal and you should talk to your dealer about it. They obviously feel this could lead to a much bigger problem.

Acura3200, I had this happen the other night, but when I went over 2 the auto side & came back , it was OK. I know there is probably switches in that side that has to send a signal to the "computer". It's been REAL cold here, so I just attrib. it 2 that, b/c it's never happened before or since! Have 12,500 miles on car.

One quick question.
I was just playing with my squential mode. I know there is a speed limit for downshifting, but is there any limit for upshifting? like you have to exceed a certain speed to upshit? cuz mine doesn't shift sometimes as well, but again it was snowing bad outside i was going slow(40km/h).

You have to be going faster than a certain speed (I believe the threshholds are listed in the owner's manual) before you can manually upshift. This is to prevent the engine from lugging and is perfectly normal.

I have a 99 and the same thing happened to me. i guess i had spilled a coke a little while before ( and it ran right into the damn shifter ) and they said that is what caused it. apparently there is a very small and delicate switch in there that got broken. they cleaned the stickyness out of my shifter and put in the new part under warranty and that was it. well, that was it until 58k......then they had to put a whole new transmission in for me. that was a pain. but im not sure if that is the same case with your car. that is what happened to mine and it had the same problems that you are describing. hope that might help.
