2000 TL Tranny fluid refill hole

I am preparing to replace my Tranny fluid. However I have 2 questions. Any help is appreciated.

How do you know when to replace other than just the recommemded milage from the manual? What I mean is that when I check the fluid level at the dip stick, the liquid does not look dark even though it has been about 50K miles or so. It actually looks clear. My Car is currently at about 107K miles but I had it replaced by a shop when it was around 50K or so.

Where is the filling bolt on the 2000 TL? I looked at the DIY thread picture in the sticky post and it is not the same as mine. I tried to insert some images but I get a prompt for URL. Don't know how to do it. Can someone help with a picture of where the filling bolt is?

TIA

on top of trans when you open hood- look for 19mm wide bolt head says ATF on it

OR if you are on an original tranmission with the `recall installed oil jet kit`--
you will see a small hose going in to a bolt that goes in that same filler hole- thats the oil jet kit
remove its 10mm holding bolt on the side of its base and pull straight up to remove-
now the hole is open like normal- a trans fluid funnel, long skinny- is best to avoid a mess on refill

USE ONLY honda atf

make sure you know how to read the dipstick after refill- warm driven-engine off.
it will drain between 3 and 3.3 qts so be sure to put same amount back in
Running it low will increase the danger of disaster

ask if the trans oil jet kit recall has been done

Thanks for the great info.
I think you provided the missing piece. I brought the car in for the recall years ago... Comparing the picture of the DIY, I think I have a hose attachment at the location of the bolt. So I will check that later.

BTW, if the fluid is dark, I would think that I will see it at the dip stick as well. Is that the correct assumption?

fluid color isnt indicative of need to change- unless its really bad and burnt
It can go from red to brown in 10 miles if you only change 3 of the 7.3 total capacity
Thats why a real 3x3 method is 12 qts but dont do that - just 3 should be good for you at 100.
3qts every 15kmiles wont hurt and may even help slightly

best to warm engine/trans with 10 minute freeway drive them immedialty put on ramps and drain the fluid- cant go wrong there either- says ATF above the drain bolt
and the other drainbolt says OIL as in engine oil

since you did the 2004 issued recall and have owned the car since then-
and no warranty trans was installed due to failure..- you have an oil jet kit installed

Its easier than an engine oil change-~
there is no screw on filter to drip hot fluid up your arm~

BTW, I was always told to use Honda ATF only. I wonder if I must buy it from the dealer which costs about $7 per quart + tax. I have seen ATF from part stores that saids specifically for Honda. I am sure it is much cheaper particularlly when I will use many quarts. Hummm.....

take a quick, trong swing with a breaker bar to get the drain bolt off. my friend fucked up my drain bolt when he tried to slowly open it with a 25" breaker bar...
