Question 2000 Acura TL, when to replace brake rotors

Hello,
I had OEM brake pads replaced at 45K miles, and 96K miles. Right now the car has approximately 142k miles on it.

I would like to know when do you need to replace the front brake rotors.

Thanks.

WOW, 142k on the original rotors?! I know the OEM pads are easy on the rotors but they (at least mine) warp out pretty much in sync with the pads wearing out. if you don't have a shimmy when you step on the brakes at speed leave 'em.

replace them, there are many aftermarket rotors and pads to choose from, like EBC. i just did some brake tests with my EBC brakes, 70-25 mph test, 10 in arrow, no fading, no warpage, just uber seamless powerful braking, excellent.

there are also many other aftermarkets to choose from, many people have them all with good results.

There is a minimum thickness specification. Measure them to determine if they are under spec.

I agree- got to be worn down to min thickness by now!

get 2 shops opinions or go with your gut and just get some good brakes
the aftermarket brakes are so much stronger than stock

What do you do? - commute 500 miles on a freeway with zero stopping?
45 and 96 now 142!--thats good brake pad life

you did the 105 service with timing belt?

I would do nothing unless they are an issue.

There are new ways to true rotors, and if there are a couple millimeters on the rotors [I think 24mm or 26mm is the fail mark on that rotor], they are fine.

Even if the rotor gave you a slight shimmy, I'd try the new machine to true up rotors, where they do it on the car.

I had it done at the Honda dealership, and with new pads, I figure it is a decent thing to try.

Some rotors might keep warping over and over, if the metal is compromised due to high heat and rapid cooling, or something like that.

Given the way you drive, the "warped rotor" syndrome doesn't appear to afflict your car.

assume nothing!
have a professional brake shop inspect them fully- measure rotor thickness and other wear issues

its a normal part of wear for the rotors to get thinnner..more prone to vibration and warping and causes caliper to extend farther than design

If you have to ask if they are ok- let a pro ,,better yet- 2 places inspect it for you

Yes, I didn't note this.

Go to a Honda or Acura dealership for an oil change or tire rotation, and while it is up, get a professional opinion. They may even do a stand-alone inspection for free.

I had just finished up doing every conceivable service to a gifted '00 w/105K, and the only thing left was a slight shimmy when braking.

My front rotors had 28.04mm on them, and 26mm is the fail point.

While warped rotors are a reoccurring issue for some owners, I'd guess this is not the case for all drivers.

Honda resurfaced the rotors, installed new OEM pads, and balanced the front wheels, for $160. New rotors and pads, and my labor, would have been more.

Again, if there is not an issue now, perhaps at next inspection, asking the tech to take a close look, and taking a micrometer to the rotors.

a proper brake inspection include measuring the caliper thickness- looking for runout and inspecting for heat cracks from hard use or dragging the brakes in traffic (example)

the pads must be checked the same way
A normal/casual brake inspection is to peek thru a small hole in top of caliper that allows a glimpse of the center cut in the pd- thats its depth guage -so you guess how much is there
How good are you at guessing 2-3 4 5 millimeters- thats not much!!
BUT
when pads get below 4 mm they dont work as well, and 2mm is absolute min- thats when the noise maker tab hits the rotor on application and you get a high pitch squeal telling you something needs attention today!

Every rotor has casted “reject size”. If your rotors are at it, replace them. I’ve replaced OEM with blank Brembo-s from TireRack and never had a warpage since then. Now Bremob-s have over 60K miles on them and run like new.

Everyone,
Thank you very much for your time and knowledge. I currently still have approximately 6.1 mm on each of the right front, and left front rotors, that is over a span of 46,000 miles.

I have received quotes in the S. California private repair shops for honda oem brakes and machine rotors for 160.00
and honda oem brakes and new Brembo (smooth) for
300.00

Thanks again.

where did you measure 6mm at? thats not a front total width measure- thats what is stamped on the rotor center- example MIN thickness 24MM
thats overall, not each disc is xxm thick
