Exclamation 2000 Acura TL sportshift (posted successfully)

I just got my 2000 TL the other day and noticed that it shifts between 1st and 2nd in sportshift by itself. i bought the TL based on its sportshift feature, and now I am kind of disappointed that it has this 'feature'. I understand the 4 spd 1999 model lets you shift between 1st and 2nd, and now kind of regret that I didn't get that instead. Do you think the 1999's are more fun in that respect? Are 2000s inferior to 99's? Do you think that the driver not getting to shift between 1st and 2nd doesn't affect the usefulness and the fun sportshift offers; and that a 5 spd is better than a 4 speed even if you can't shift between 1 and 2? Throw your in.

Also is there any way (mod or something) I can shift between 1 and 2 in my 2000 TL? I heard of gateshift but that damages your transmission and its kind of hard to go from 1 to 2 to D5 sportshift in one breath and vice versa. Any ideas? Thanks!

You will find the SS feature a pointless thing unless your at a road course racing. or in the back woods having fun. Thats all its good for. It wont make your car faster. Its a lame attempt at SS.
There is NO mod to do to get it not to, and Gate shifting DOES NOT damage your trans.

i believe you just go from 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 to 5..... and forget the whole ss mode.

i have a 99, and i just use it for fun, letting the rpms build up and then switching, makes me feel like i have a manual. haha but not really, cuz it does a bad job at it. but whatever its a fun little thing in my opinion

These are not rear wheel drive drag cars!!!!

Spend a day at race track offered high performance driving school before you have to buy another TL when this one ends up around a tree

If 1-2 auto shift is to protect you from forgetting its in SS when you hit the parking lot
Its redlines fast in 1st gear but with no torque behind it- worthless!

You didn't test drive the TL before you bought it? I doubt anyone would consider a 00' "inferior" to a 99' based solely on the fact that you don't have control over 1st. Also, if I remember correctly a stock 00' does the 1/4 mile in 1/2 a second faster than a stock 99'. That should make the inner drag-racer in you jump for joy.

I've been spending a lot of time in Off Topic lately. I have a LOT of free time at my new job and I'm afraid that if I spend too much time in the 2nd gen forum I will want to spend all the money I make on mods

threadjacked lol!

yea i guess you're right badazztl, the 00 has a number of improvements, and I still can control four gears (1 and 2 being 1). And the only time I would want to shift out of 1st late is if I want a slow redline, which i can't imagine myself or anyone wanting to do. mostly, i'll use SS to downshift for added passing power and maybe downshift to 2nd when coming to a stop (2nd gives you a lot of engine braking). you guys made me feel better! thanks!

dont use the transmission as a brake
Use the brakes for that
Transmissions cost 4000$ and you are not familiar with these and their failures yet
Do some reading on the forum
Brakes are cheap and easily upgraded to ones the really stop the car

On my 03 TLS it will stay in first gear with the SS, BUT only if you are really on it.... I find that the reg D5 does a fine job. LOL.

yeah ss is fun on a back country road and thats about it. Of course I wanted an auto trans - if I wanted to shift gears all day i would have gotten a cl-s or kept my A4.
