2000 acura tl, radiator fan stays on after engine is turned off

Hello,

I have just replaced my acura tl, with a new radiator, upper and lower radiator hose, radiator cap and also a new thermostat.

However, after driving 45 mins. to 1 hour. Afterwards, when I turn off the ignition. The driver side fan stays on for 10 minutes.

Is this okay, can someone please let me know.

Are both fans suppose to be on, or are both fans suppose to be off.

Is there a part that I overlooked. There was also new coolant added during this replacement.

Thanks for any advice.

That's normal at least for me, most notably on warmer days.
There are two or so temperature sensors on the base TL to look at if you think that your fan runs abnormally long.

Hey Rich 9, Did you ensure that the air was purged from the cooling system after replacing those parts ? It's critical to properly "burp" the air with the heater on high. The sensor may be getting a false reading if there's air trapped within the system.

+1 double check the coolant and for air in the lines.

did you have the A/C on ?

"If the car has air conditioning, there is an additional radiator mounted in front of the normal radiator. This "radiator" is called the air conditioner condenser, which also needs to be cooled by the air flow entering the engine compartment. As long as the air conditioning is turned on, the system will keep the fan running, even if the engine is not running hot. This is because if there is no air flow through the air conditioning condenser, the air conditioner will not be able to cool the air entering the interior."

when the driver side fan runs more than 1-2 minutes after shutdown at normal temp
you have a bad Fan Temp Sensor A
its probably not running when needed =at stoplights, but runs 10+ minutes after shutdown

on your 00 its located lower rear corner of radiator, passenger side
screws out and new one screws in
make sure to burp system per the acura TL owner book
dont have one? = download for free www.owners.acura.com need VIN for that

note heater must be on full hot and cabin fan running during the process
open doors and windows!
its a mini radiator and part of the total system capacity, can trap air if left off/closed

if there is air in system now, it can get trapped behind thermostat and mess with the fan

ac automatically turns on BOTH fans
driver fan is main engine cooling, generally runs briefly a few times when stopped for long lights
with pass side coming on in extreme overheat situations
otherwise pass is dedicated to the ac

note: if car ever runs hot- turn AC OFF,reduces load, and heat in front of engine radiator

Just joined as a new member to share my experience with others. I also had a cooling fan driver side not turn off on a 2012 TL with over 71k miles. Dealership kept my car for four days and did part swaps and couldn't find anything wrong. Eventually they blamed it on the ECM. They replaced it and now the fan is working correctly. This will cost over $1300. Reading all other posts here no one ever mentioned the ECM so I don't believe in this fix. Just wanted to share my experience. Please reply if any one else was told this was the fix.

welcome- this is the gen 2 1999-2003 section of acurazine

Our problem when the driver side fan runs more than a few minute is fan sensor A or the main cooling fan sensor, located bottom right corner-rear- of radiator (2000-2003)
99s its at the thermostat

No reports of it being something else, beyond air in system -fooling sensor-
but its also got `some kind of leak in the end of the story`~

notice this thread hasn't seen action in a few years
thanks for your input- try posting in the correct area for your 2012
and welcome to azine- we can save you money with most fixes!!

The fans on my '02 TL-S don't run with the car off & key out. Are they supposed to keep running?

Only if the car is running very hot. In a '02-TL-S I'd say it should be rare.

IF the driver fan runs after a really hot day shutdown - it should run 1-2 minutes max! AND THATS IT

IF its running 5-10 minutes or more -replace the fan temp sensor A, on your 02 its located passenger side rear bottom corner of rad- screws in,

burp rad PER OWNER BOOK METHOD that's about 20 minutes of effort =with idle and 2000 rpm segments until fan runs and goes off
NO AC USE!!!!!

NOTE HEATER must be on full hot and cabin fan on full high speed during the burping- Open car doors to allow heat out--during entire burping heater must remain ON- allowing flow of coolant thru it and its ability to hide air!

does your driver side fan run for 30-60 seconds when stopped at light?
that's good
Does pass side fan come on with AC ON operation? thats good

Does the temp ever do anything besides get to the same 1 or 2 lines below half it always does -and stay there all the time driving?
any temp rise or fall is of concern!!
