1999 TL Transmission

Hi,

My 99 TL (with 99k miles) is starting to show signs of tranny failure. When cold, the reverse gear slams into gear but this sounds like a motor mount issue based on what I have read (though not sure which mount since there are quite a few). Additionally, this week it started slipping from second to third (revs higher by about 2-300 RPM before engaging into third after about a half a second). Also the shift into forth is more jerky when cold. It does get a little better when warmed up but I still feel like it doesnt shift ideally.

I changed my tranny fluid at Paragon Acura a few months ago (probably driven 2-3k since the change).

It sounds like I could try the following to see if it fixes the problem.

(1) clean the solenoid which I read in another thread by a person who had a similar issue. I'm not sure what the long term result of this was though...
(2) replace the pressure switches (there are two i believe on the 99 TL).

Is there anything else I should try?

Also, will replacing the motor mounts make the shifts smoother?

I'm due for a timing belt service soon (first one) so before I spend money on that and motor mounts, I want to get a feel of whether my tranny will hold up. I dont want to spend 1.5-2 grand on timing belt/motor mounts only to have my tranny die on me shortly thereafter.

Any help I can get on this matter will greatly help - especially from those who have the 99 4 speed tranny.

Thanks friends!!

your trans is dying
the hard shift into R is a first sign of line pressure issues from clogging

Try waiting 2 minutes with car running in the morning before driving off.
that may ease into r better, thanks to piggylover for that tip!

as for slipping-revving probs- thats clutches and no fix

new fluid probably made it worse, thats common

front motor mount- behind radiator, is common failure--
followed by passenger side mount from carrying extra load
Front can be ckd visually for oil leak, from under car looking up,
or with 2 people and one holds brakes in gear while revving engine to 2000 quickly
If engine jumps the mount is bad
Acura techs normally look for those when its in the shop- but you cant count on it
when its an oil change kid doing the work

if its trans plus you need the 105 and a few mounts = time has ended for that car,
unless you got it free and plan to keep it 4 years,,then it would average out on cost over lifetime...4grand 4 years..average car cost
